Has anyone heard the news? We should all know by now that Microsoft plans on taking XP off of store shelves as of June 30th. (Will it actually happen, who knows? Especially since Microsoft has already pushed back this date before.)
Well it’s not a big shocker that many users are not fans of Vista. Do we remember when XP first came out? It took users quiet sometime before they fully opened up to the idea of XP. (Well maybe for some it wasn’t that hard to convince, especially if they were using the crappiest OS ever, Microsoft ME) Now over the past few years since XP was first released, many of us can safely say that we feel like XP has become a stable and decent OS.
That’s not to say that Microsoft hasn’t been doing everything that they possibly can to get users to embrace Vista.
Watch out faithful Halo gamers! In order for us to play Halo 2 on our PC’s, we have to have Vista, and oh when Microsoft finally decides to put Halo 3 on shelves for our PC’s (When that date is going to be, who knows since it took them forever to get Halo and Halo 2 out for our PC’s) guess what, Halo 3 will also need Vista to run. ![]()
Can we say Fun? Not so much.
Really can we all head out to a computer store and pick up a brand new system that has XP on it? No, but what we can do is pick up a copy of XP on the side and downgrade from XP to Vista.
Oh but here’s the kicker that happened to us about a year ago. We pick up a machine that has Vista on it not long after the highly anticipated Vista release. Well guess what, many of the programs we needed to run won’t work properly on Vista, so what do we do? Why we format and reinstall XP. Here’s where it gets funny, we’ve often heard different pieces of information regarding hardware being XP compatible.
Not so much in our situation. All we can say is thank god we had the old system still lying around because there sure were parts that we had to take out and put in the new system.
Backwards Compatible our ass!
What many of the users who love and embrace XP want Microsoft to do, is to hold back before they take it off of the shelves and retire it forever along with 95, 98 and ME. (ME, Ha what a piece of crap that was) What many of these users want is for Microsoft to keep XP on the shelves until at least 2010 when their next version of Windows is set for release. ![]()
Oh yay!
Another two years and we’ll get another crap OS that we have to wait a few years before it’s considered *stable*. Oh the joys, no wonder the world is heading towards Mac’s.

Mac’s suck. I have to use them at work all day. They are for people who nedd training wheels.
Vista is simple. Anyone who has issues needs to get their head out of their #$%.

I love Windows so much I smashed my PC and bought a MacPro. Stephan your comment is a little off the mark. A computer isn’t supposed to be difficult to use and manage…it’s supposed to be like a Mac.
I don’t need my computer to ask me everytime I launch the sub-par Internet Explorer if I truly want to connect to the internet. PCs are good for one thing…doorstops!

Don’t know jack about Vista or Mac, but after reading a rant on Cantgetrich about Mac’s, this little PC vs Mac argument is starting to get pretty entertaining for me…lol.
Windows is pretty easy to use so I’m not sure where the difficulty comes in. If you can’t run it you might need a bit more schooling. Also I use Vista, and have had no problems so far, but then again I don’t really play games, so i guess I can’t really argue here.

XP vs Vista? As computers and the operating systems have advanced over the years they seem to have become less and less stable without 5 million updates. The only thing that hasn’t changed is the cost of the OS which keeps going up.
XP, Vista, or Mac? Why is the choice so hard? They are all POS and the developing companies should be held accountable. Choose what you want because you will be forced to upgrade sooner or later anyway. One way or another Microsoft and Mac will get their money out of you for the new products.
Looks like there’s an advantage for those who are “out of date”. I haven’t used Vista but my DH’s laptop uses it. Fortunately he doesn’t use it much so there hasn’t been too many issues for us.
I don’t care for Vista, however, I have never used Vista. So, does this make me bias? I just built a new system and put XP on it. I have to much software that I may have to replace if I get XP. What about a dual boot system? I was thinking of getting one of those. Is that the way?
If you can use Vista, I say buy it. I am a windows owner, and would like to switch to mac, but it’s just too much hassle atm. If you’re going to use windows at least use the latest version if possible, the old one will get outdated asap anyways.

I work as a computer technician and I end up having to work with XP, Vista and Macs.
Vista still has massive driver issues so its worth avoiding that for now. XP has hit a nice spot where it supports everything and is stable and as for Macs.. Although I like Macs and can definitely see the use for them, I feel like I am using a childs toy when I am on one. They painful to fix.

I refused to buy PC with Vista on it and even after a month of research, refused to buy a window machine at all. So, I converted to Apple and haven’t looked back once.
Switching to Apple is not hard at all either. Just take you new and old machine to the nearest AppleStore and they will transfer everything for you. No argument there.
Cow…you inspired me to write my own post as the comment I was going to put here ran way too long. Check it out here: http://portfolio.wilcox-studios.com/blog/its-evildont-touch-itor-is-it/
You can have my PC when you pry it from my cold…dead…hands.
I was actually more or less happy with XP. But just a week akgo I tried WUBI - the new little programm to install the brand new Ubuntu Linux as easy as a Windows program (and with the option to deinstall it just like a Windows program). I’m fascinated by what Linux has at last come to be: a nice and easy, well working OS. I now have XP and Ubuntu on my PC and can choose with one to start when booting up (default was XP but I changed that to Ubuntu).
Even my PokerStars software than actually should only run on Windows works under Ubuntu Linux.

Ubuntu is the first OS i’ve experienced to be fun and not pain (and I started out over 20 years ago with CTOS and the very DOS versions).

XP under SP3 is far superior to Vista. Installed yeserday and it’s a noticable speed improvement. I have the pleasure of having to write code that has to support the vast majority of MS Windows OS’s (well back to 98 anyway). The number of headaches that re-writing for Vista gave me combined with the stunningly bad performance was enough to make me decide that I will never use Vista. When XP is finally retired for good I’ll be porting all code to Java and using Ubuntu myself. I really believe that MS have shot themselves in the foot with Vista, I only know of 2 offices that have made the switch. The extra hardware expense in upgrading ALL your PCs to a level that allows them to run Vista is going to have office managers looking for ANY alternative. And don’t even get me started about networked printers under Vista.
I keep on hearing people talking about these Mac things, I’ve been told they’re some sort of toy computer for under-performing school kids, is this right?

How sad, a petition to keep alive such an old OS as XP. especially because 80-90% of Windows users would be a lot better of with Ubuntu. So no need at all getting desperate .
What can I say, people don’t like getting used to new stuff
Catharuna, can users still run all their regular PC apps of Ubunta?
All i know is vista is slow as crap
and takes up so many resources. XP is like 2-3x faster so -.-
Hmm, my Vista runs very quickly and efficiently. While the way mac advertises it does make it seem all the better, the only thing really better is that it blocks viruses without virus protection.
This doesn’t effect me at all, I don’t get viruses, ever. And on the rare chance that I do, I just do a system restore back to before I had the virus. No need to go out and buy a whole new OS for it.

“Catharuna, can users still run all their regular PC apps of Ubunta?”
No but Linux includes 1,000s of programs that match or exceed the functionality of most (but not all) Windows apps. And a program called Wine allows one to run most common Win apps on Linux.
Not claiming any vast experience but I’ve played around with Vista a bit and found it unimpressive. The charge that XP holdouts are just afraid to change is in many cases pure BS. I tinker around with various Linux distros all the time and many of them are wildly divergent flavors wrapped around a common, basic kernel (Linux is a kernel not an Operating System).
Unlike many of my Linux user fellows I have nothing against XP and in fact have it up and running on another computer right now. XP properly maintained and secured works just fine for my uses and I haven’t the slightest impulse to jump on the Vista bandwagon. And my employer, an upscale retail chain, uses XP Pro and our IT gurus have no interest in Vista either. So I’m sticking with XP until it’s end of life in 2014 — although by then Linux will be so evolved that XP will probably be irrelevant as well as any new marketing gimmickry Microsoft comes up with (Windows 7 or 8 etc) to boost profits.
Oh God, I’m thinking of buying a new laptop for some time now, but I’m delaying the purchase because I can’t figure of what to choose: mac, windows vista or xp.
Why does this need to be so difficult?!
Does anyone know of a good website where these are compared to each other?
Thanks!
You can spend some time in the Digg Apple/Microsoft/Linux zones browsing endless “debates” about which OS is superior to the others. Aside from the typical Digg trash talk there are often many clear presentations from tech savvy users outlining the merits of their OS of choice.
XP is already a very limited choice and will soon be totally unavailable as a factory (OEM) option. All of my Mac using friends love their Macs and none of my Windows friends are in any hurry to try Vista. It all depends on what you need your laptop for and what you want to spend for it. No website can determine that for you.
I think XP is best al lthe way.
but Vista is getting better as computer systems are getting better.
pretty good grafix in vista. XP is quick.
