I think it is a good idea to pick 2-3 mentors who you trust and who have a reputation for delivering helpful content in their material. I don't think it's wise to ignore the successful internet marketers but I also think it's unwise to follow more than a couple at a time. Trying to learn from too many people will give you "information overload". Trying to always learn the "new" thing and probably never taking the time to implement any of it.

With all these new search engine changes I think we should focus on combining videos(youtube), images(google images) and on site content to get more visitors to our site.
Building another web2.0 society will not work with all sites built now. Aren't we already members of several sites like myspace, facebook, hi5 and others?

I loved this posted, you are so right about how people demean others who don't see something right in front of them but when it comes to themselves never see the obvious. For your upcoming articles on Web 2.0 traffic you really got my interest peaked. Can't wait to see what you have write.

Great Post John.

I myself has started something a few months back that is completely against the grain of what most marketers talk about..

and while I am getting allot of eyes & ears, most are waiting for others to jump on board before they push it.

It has been an interesting ride so far, and we see only good things in the future..... just waiting for one or two more people to jump on board.. :-)

Figuring out your own strategy can be pretty daunting at first, but its not hard. No blogger can possibly follow all the advice out there so its just case of taking the advice that is pertinent to your products, then apply it, measure it, tweak it, repeat.

Find your own niche by just thinking about what you're doing and testing that it works for you. Great post, John.

This is a great post. I understand completely what you mean. Sometimes if you just think about something the answer is obvious. And most of the time if someone else successful is doing something then it is probably a good idea to at least give it a shot, it's probably a good place to start to say the least.

We think it is because we have been there and made these mistakes and when success started showing its face we were able to look back and realize where we stumbled.

Here a real world example I see often in the Quebec City. Someone build a gas station at a corner and a few months later the corner has 2 more gas station. They each offer gas but tweak the formula a bit by offering different services like a car wash or specialty coffees.

P.S. For Paul McCartney fans, he is coming to Quebec City for a free concert on July 20th. It's part of the 400th year celebration of Quebec City. Expecting a 250 000 crowd not cows. ;) Celine Dion, also free, 100 000 crowd might be move at the same place to get more people.

In a way this is common sense, but there are so many drones out there just following the big guys and the masses to make it. If a person is expecting results, following the leader is not the way.

This goes for any business venture that someone may enter into. Take what others are doing well and change what they are not doing well and you will be successful.

The web is constantly changing so it makes sense that information you buy now will become outdated.

But I have to say I suspect that many of the less customer-focused contingent only sell information once it is starting to lose effectiveness. They milk the strategy for all its worth before selling it for $147.

So I love this "think for yourself" post and what you are doing here in your series. Thank you.

I will be looking forward to this new series and also to taking my blinders off more!
