Web 2.0 Traffic Strategies & Playing Follow the Leader

If you have ever seen the movie Dumb and Dumber, you will remember the part at the end of the movie when the two main characters Lloyd and Harry (played by Jim Carry and Jeff Daniels), where hitchhiking and suddenly a bus load of gorgeous girls in bikinis pulled up and mentioned they were in need of two guys to travel cross country with them to put tanning lotion on them.
Finally the audience thought to themselves (well we did anyway), that it looked as if the two unlucky guys were going to get a break!
But it was not to be… being simple minded, the characters mentioned “Yes, we know of a couple guys that would be perfect, they passed them back a few miles down the road and if they went that way they would be sure to find them.”
That is not word for word from the movie, we paraphrased a bit but that was the gist of it.
Now, 99% of the audience that watched this movie laughed at that part, thinking what a bunch of idiots… the answer to their dreams were right in front of them. Yet, we wonder of the 99% (we could not say 100% because we are sure there was a least 1% that the joke went over their head) what percentage of these people do this very same thing every single day.
We seem to be very strange creatures; we are quick to criticize others for missing obvious signals or making mistakes but yet we do not realize how often we do the very same things.
This makes us think of a quote that our father often says…
“Un asked for criticism has never turned an enemy into a friend but sure has turned a lot of friends into enemies.”
We are so quick to judge others and point out the obvious to them and yet we miss the obvious so many times our selves.
OK, so what in the world does this have to do with Web 2.0 traffic strategies?
Well the relationship is… ARE YOU MISSING THE OBVIOUS?
We mention in the title “Follow the Leader” because this is so much what a lot of us in the MMO world do… we sit and wait for someone else to figure things out for us and then we try them. We almost act like we are not smart enough to figure this stuff out for ourselves.
The problem is once someone else has figured something out and shared it, we can guarantee that things have changed a bit and so when you try and follow what they did you get frustrated because some of those things have changed and it appears the system no longer works.
Here are two examples…
Example 1 – Tag & Ping: Just over two years ago Sean Wu introduced his “Tag and Ping” course and everyone was acting like it was this new strategy that he invented. When the course came out the system started getting flooded and the sites that were used made modifications and so the original system had to be tweaked. Those that bought the course late got frustrated because it appeared that the strategy no longer worked… when in reality it did but you had to think for yourself a bit.
Example 2 – Facebook Ads: In late 2007 there was a young guy named Nich Brodka, who came out with an ebook on Facebook advertising called No More Adwords. It was actually at first look, a kinda of poorly put together ebook with lots of spelling and grammar issues but the content was good (I am sure he has since made improvements). Not long after the ebook came out Facebook made some changes to the way they qualified ads and the original stuff taught in the ebook got a little outdated…. So instead of thinking for themselves, people started criticizing the content and saying it did not work but in fact it did with a few tweaks.
OK, so we have giving two examples and hopefully you see where we are going but if not then just keep reading.
Over the next couple weeks we are going to be sharing some different Web 2.0 traffic strategies that we use and they are all strategies that we have used and received decent results from. Each of the resources that we are going share with you are third party sites and we do not own them… and they may very well change how they work. That means that even the next day after the strategy is shared (heck it could be the very moment the post is made), something might change and the steps we lay out might not work exactly the same as they did in the post.
Do NOT whine and complain and say “Cow your strategy does NOT work!”
Instead, please think for yourself!
If you want to truly grow your business online you need to become a LEADER and STOP always being the follower.
A little less then two years ago when this whole Web 2.0 thing started to really catch on with everyone, we buckled down and started playing around with loads of different social sites. We looked at what they offered, how they could be used and how we could use it to grow our business. Some sites are still in use today the same way they were 2 years ago, some have changed and some are no longer even looked at.
There is no magic formula or special calculation that makes this work. Instead of waiting for someone to tell you what the next best strategy is to use, go out there and be the one figuring that out. All you need to ask yourself is…
- Does the site allow you to create an account for free?
- Does it get lots of traffic?
- Do the search engines like it?
- Can you put links in it to your blog?
That right there is an eBook full of info… those four questions!
What else do you really need to know that you would need an eBook to teach you?
Do not sit there and think there is a magic answer that someone must know that will uncover everything you need to know. Do not scroll through ClickBank hoping to find the product that will teach you some ancient secret that no one else knows. The secret is simply… use common sense (yes we know it is not so common with everyone) and get to work!
As we share with you these strategies over the next little while, PLEASE… and we stress PLEASE… take your blinders off, look at the general concepts of how and why we are using these different systems and put them to work for you.
Think for yourself and figure out how to take what we teach you and make it work for you!
We really hope we are not coming across too harsh here, we really do want to hear great success stories from our readers… we want you to succeed.
We will be starting the Web 2.0 posts on Tuesday… the next couple posts are already planned for something else.
So what are your thoughts on this post… does it hit home, did you like it, hate it or what?
Also, please answer this poll… it is confidential and we are really curious what the answers will be so please be honest with yourself.

I love posts like this, it’s needed. First you guys give out a great ebook ( can’t wait to finish it!) Then you tell us to quit buying all this crap hoping for a magic bullet and actually use our brain.
I will be looking forward to this new series and also to taking my blinders off more!
JK Swopess last blog post..Ad management for the blogger on a budget
The web is constantly changing so it makes sense that information you buy now will become outdated.
But I have to say I suspect that many of the less customer-focused contingent only sell information once it is starting to lose effectiveness. They milk the strategy for all its worth before selling it for $147.
So I love this “think for yourself” post and what you are doing here in your series. Thank you.

In a way this is common sense, but there are so many drones out there just following the big guys and the masses to make it. If a person is expecting results, following the leader is not the way.
This goes for any business venture that someone may enter into. Take what others are doing well and change what they are not doing well and you will be successful.

Here a real world example I see often in the Quebec City. Someone build a gas station at a corner and a few months later the corner has 2 more gas station. They each offer gas but tweak the formula a bit by offering different services like a car wash or specialty coffees.
P.S. For Paul McCartney fans, he is coming to Quebec City for a free concert on July 20th. It’s part of the 400th year celebration of Quebec City. Expecting a 250 000 crowd not cows. ;) Celine Dion, also free, 100 000 crowd might be move at the same place to get more people.

I don’t understand how you write these great tips but you are really great John.
They will really help me.
Thank you for the tips.

We think it is because we have been there and made these mistakes and when success started showing its face we were able to look back and realize where we stumbled.
This is a great post. I understand completely what you mean. Sometimes if you just think about something the answer is obvious. And most of the time if someone else successful is doing something then it is probably a good idea to at least give it a shot, it’s probably a good place to start to say the least.
Figuring out your own strategy can be pretty daunting at first, but its not hard. No blogger can possibly follow all the advice out there so its just case of taking the advice that is pertinent to your products, then apply it, measure it, tweak it, repeat.
Find your own niche by just thinking about what you’re doing and testing that it works for you. Great post, John.

Great Post John.
I myself has started something a few months back that is completely against the grain of what most marketers talk about..
and while I am getting allot of eyes & ears, most are waiting for others to jump on board before they push it.
It has been an interesting ride so far, and we see only good things in the future….. just waiting for one or two more people to jump on board.. :-)

Cheers,
Great post and what a great way to set expectations for your future posts. I am looking forward to the Web 2.0 posts you make in the future!
I loved this posted, you are so right about how people demean others who don’t see something right in front of them but when it comes to themselves never see the obvious. For your upcoming articles on Web 2.0 traffic you really got my interest peaked. Can’t wait to see what you have write.
Darryls last blog post..E-business Advantage – New Dofollow Search Engine
With all these new search engine changes I think we should focus on combining videos(youtube), images(google images) and on site content to get more visitors to our site.
Building another web2.0 society will not work with all sites built now. Aren’t we already members of several sites like myspace, facebook, hi5 and others?
