The Big BooHoos

After browsing the Internet for a couple of hours we started noticing a pattern in recent posts on several blogs. We’d like to call them the big boohoos. Lets see if we can explain the term.

There’s a clear hierarchy in the blogosphere, like it or not. Some bloggers are known by everyone and others tend to keep in the shadows. Being a small blog, all your readers are going to love you. They like your content and that’s why they stick around to read you. Nobody boohoos about your blog. But then, one day you publish that golden article and a ton of people suddenly find their way to your blog. They’ll stick around, tell their friends how cool you are and before you know it, your famous in the Internet!

Unfortunately since you’re in the spotlight now, there’s another reason to read you. Your loyal readers who liked your blog before you made a name for yourself still read you for who you are. Some of the newly acquired readers will read you to feed off and get new content to write about. It’s no fun to write about John Doe because nobody gives a toss. It’s better to write about John Chow or Problogger for example, because everybody knows them! It’s “interesting”.

Then there’s a choice to be made. You’ve picked your subject to write about. An article about an internet celeb which will surely get you some readers and comments. What will bring the most attention to yourself? Being nice or foul mouthing the celeb? Just think about all the celeb gossip tabloids out there. They purely excist because people love to read bad stuff about the celebs. And why not give the people what they want? After all, nobody will think twice about your article if it’s about a blog that has 10 RSS subscribers. No, you’re gonna have to pick on a bigger blog to bully. Because you’re an attention whore.

We decided not to list the articles here, not because we’re depriving them from some link love, but simply because there’s too many out there to link to. And we didn’t want to offend anyone by singling them out. Anyone with half a brain knows what kind of posts we’re talking about. They are either full of crap by writing about things that “could” happen and putting ideas in the heads of their readers, or they dissect a blog “in-depth” and purely highlight the bad and the ugly. Anything for a bit of attention.

Our question to those that write these kind of articles; What drives you to write them? Why don’t you write about john doe? He needs the attention and linklove. Why don’t you stop complaining about what the bigger blogs are doing, accusing them of rehacking old posts and not providing you with interesting material? How about you stop BooHoo-ing the world and start to provide interesting material yourself? Not that writing about us isn’t interesting, but you catch our drift.
Why would you write about a blog when you say you stopped reading it and unsubscribed from it? Is it frustration? Is it because you think it makes you look cool by “standing up” for your self? There’s really nothing to stand up for, it’s just a blog.

Before the flames begin, this was a strictly non-personal observation we’ve made and yes, we’re aware that we’re sitting ducks cows right now with a bulls-eye on our forehead (no pun intended). We just hope that you’ll think twice before you decide to get a cheap thrill by bashing a blogger thats higher up in the food chain than you just to get some attention.

Well, catching onto a sudden hot topic such as the recent WP 2.3 upgrade is a trend. Look at the Blog Rush widget, you can see it in everyone’s blog!

It is up to the blogger’s view, if this can get him/her the readers and visits, why not?

Can I ask which plugin that provides the smilies above the comment editor? Thanks.

This entry reminded me of my hatred for people that complain about what’s on the television. You have a controversial show on, and the next day there are 200 complaints about the programme, how horrible it was, and how dare they show it.

The people who watched it, and were disgusted by it, have the same abilities as everyone else. Simply turn over if you don’t like what you see.

Some people even complain without watching it, which is the strangest thing.

It’s our choice what to watch*, and what not to watch, same as it’s our choice what to read and what not to read.

Mxx

* There are limits, of course. You can’t simply stick a snuff movie on TV saying ‘you have the choice to switch it off’ as there are obviously levels of society that shouldn’t be met - and there is certainly a difference between free will and creating a public acceptance of what society should allow.

Love the dancing yellow cow lol

Gotta say that bashing, flaming, whatever you call it is wrong on all accounts but if you truly disagree with someone, even if they are a more famous blogger, I think it’s fine. Straight ranting and bitching is not productive and un-welcomed on all levels.

I must admit on some part though, sometimes many things get repeated, either by the same blogger who posted a while back, or the same topic gets covered by multiple bloggers. It is incredibly annoying to come across your RSS reader of say 20 bloggers, 19 (if not all 20) of which will discuss the same subject.

It’s nothing to have a cow about (no pun intended), but it’s also unnecessary for one blogger to be blogging about the same thing another blogger is blogging about UNLESS there really is something in it (for example: BlogRush; everyone tried to get people in their own network which I can understand). But having most of your bloggers tell you WP v2.3 is out is pointless (this is pure example and not actually the case).

I wish more bloggers would in the same niche would please stop posting the same thing, particularly if you know a popular blog has already covered it. Just give the popular blog credit (unless of course you were first to post the news), and move on. Don’t read it off their blog and write it in your own words.

Wow this has got to be my longest comment YET

I was going to say “funny coincidence you should write this… I just read an article listing off reasons why ‘you should stop blogging’… the author said something along the lines of ‘if you think john chow is cool, do us all a favor and stop blogging’.”

But then stuff like that is out there every day, and I run into it more often than I would like, so I suppose it’s not a funny coincidence at all.

I have a feeling the aforementioned author really was just looking for an excuse to slip a Chow-snipe in there. A chowsnipe. Haha.. I like that word.

I run a site (non-bloggy type thing) that has 11,000 active registered users and a very very active forum. I’ve actually had people set up sites/blogs for the sole purpose of talking about how much I suck or my site sucks. (Usually these are people I’ve banned for being boneheads, or people who run similar, but barely popular sites, I’ve observed.) I bring this up just to say that I’ve been on both ends. My blogs are new (less than 6 months), so I can see why it’s tempting to be jealous of people who are successful, especially when they make it look so easy. But I would say this.. when something is done well, it always looks easy.

Okay, well, I went off there, and I didn’t mean to… but you just touched a nerve today as I was already in eye-rolling mode over that article I read this morning.

If you’re in the public eye with a large readership, you have to expect criticism. I wrote a post about you and Cash Quests this week that was quite critical, although I felt it was balanced, and yet I still read both sites daily.

There will always be those who attack your position, but you have a loyal readership so you can rise above this and let people talk. Talk isn’t going to bring you down and it isn’t going to affect your readership. How you react to the talk will.

Let people talk.

I never write about a bit-time blogger unless I really have something to say. The big-time bloggers are the leaders in this field, and it’s natural to look to them and respond to what they say.

Which articles are you referring to anyway? I hope not mine.

Like what you mentioned, many smaller blogs are out there sniping at the bigger blogs just to get the attention.

Personally, I believe in looking at a subject from various points of views and to give a balanced account of what you think about a subject (or in this instance, the Cow blog and it’s activities).

As long as you are fair in your comments, there will be people (and cows) who will see that your arguments are sound and you will then gain aloyal following.

Having some humor thrown in helps too.

I think some bloggers are starting to get the idea that the “Rich get Richer”. Think about it. When some things come out that are new, like DealDotCom or blogrush people want to be first to talk about it.

Example: Dealdotcom, we knew it was going to be hot so we blogged about it as soon as we could to get those referrals. Random people read the big blogs first and always sign up under them, hence giving them loads of referrals and in return making the rich richer.

That’s what it’s about, people wanting a piece of the pie.

You got a negative reaction by trying to rip people off with a silly scam…

If you had offered something of value for a fair price you would have got a positive reaction…

Does this mean I can start bashing you guys now?

As you mentioned, the big majority of the tabloids around only survive because people want to hear “bad stuff” about celebs and such. It’s the same with blogs. Readers are bored, they want entertainment (this kind of readers don’t want useful content, really just some spicy entertainment). Give them this entertainment by talking bad about someone (the bigger this someone, the better). They’ll love your blog for it. It’s easy to understand. Of course that the blogger might also be serving himself a little. Maybe some ego deprived people just feel better when talking bad about others… Don’t know.

John,

If you release a product that a lot of people see as a scam designed to empty the pockets of newbies, you are bound to get bad comments posted on blogs.

As soon as you release another product that is considered of good value, I’m sure the same people will be writing about you but in a more positive fashion.

You have to take the good with the bad and isn’t any press good anyway?

You write something positive about something - people come out against you.

You write something negative about something - a different set come out against you.

Should you care?

Should you worry?

Whenever I’m getting too concerned about the criticism against me, I just check my Paypal account and feel much better.

The big boohoos will die poor.

Its not a general situation, and it is about the product.

I don’t hate you or your blog and never referenced this site in my posts.

Your own readers and advertisers (AKA Customers) saw you “trying to empty the pockets of newbies” and called you out on it.

Again, release a value adding product for a fair price and you’ll get a good response.

Release a product like that and Ill be happy to give you a glowing review….

Ok, all joking aside…

I believe the Milk Man. I’ve seen this on a lot of blogs. We all know why, right? Because all the blogging blogs say that a great way to boost traffic is to cause controversy. Start a feud and watch the visitors stampede to your site!

And no, I don’t think it’s really about my post.

Hi Kumiko,

As you said

“Whenever I’m getting too concerned about the criticism against me”

and I have indeed criticized you, I made … yet another foolish assumption……

I should know better than to assume,

Very Sorry.

However, as you yourself have been very critical of sites and schemes you felt were poor, I don’t think the “get cheap thrills from bashing others” remark is very fair.

I don’t go out of my way to upset people, and don’t want to make enemies out of other bloggers.

Like you I just say it as I see it.. what I wrote was my honest unbiased opinion.

My blog is nothing more than a hobby, it will never make any money, I sometimes go weeks between posts (hence there are no dates to be found on the blog).

I don’t really care about attention or traffic on that site.. and I happen to think my criticism of you was fair.

In previous posts I have linked to your site as a source of honest information… which I also thought was fair….

Tabloids (and the like) get readers who want to hear about the negativity in celebs lives. The celebs don’t always like it, but there isn’t much they can do about it if they want to remain in the spotlight. Same with bloggers. If you want to be known, then you have to deal with the criticisms of the “shadow blogs”. At Bob Meets World you came pretty close to uncovering the Kumiko scam. Now you’re scamming with Kumiko and you’ve lost credibility. This makes me sad.

haha playa haters. don’t worry johncow you switched the style up. SO IF THEY HATE, LET THEM HATE AND WATCH THE MONEY PILE UP. It’s the news of the day don’t ya know? If it isn’t rehashed over and over, then it just isn’t newsworthy is it? I have stopped reading several blogs because of the same issue, but I don’t write about it or get all bent of shape and bore people with my rants about it…I just find other blogs to read. Like the Cows’ blog. Speaking of cows, one got loose in New York last week, New Jersey to be specific - now that wouldn’t be newsworthy in Texas, and certainly no crowds would stop to watch like they did in Jersey, but I have to ask….did you have anything to do with that?

Cow: My point is, if you don’t want people to question your credibility then don’t partner up with scammers. The project looks like a get rich scheme that mainly benefits the owner(s). If you’re serious about making money long term then your focus should be building up your reputation with your potential customers (readers) so that they will trust you when you do offer a (quality) product. That’s my opinion for whatever it’s worth.

You thought so yourself, didn’t you? I don’t remember you thinking “innocent until proven guilty” when you made those posts about it. And her ethics are questionable, leaning more toward gray and black hat (not trustworthy). So what??? She’s entitled to it and you’re entitled to join her. But that doesn’t make it a smart move (reputations are contagious). It might be great now but maybe not so much later. I wasn’t going to say anything though until I read this ironic post.

I miss her posts about Britney Spears and being worried about her friends getting drunk. The human touch to a blog can be very refreshing. She’s one of the mysteries of the blogosphere (to me, anyway). I’ve never once had a hit on Google Analytics from Tokyo.
