This is a guest post by Sly (the Sly Guy) from Slyvisions dot Com where you can find tips on internet marketing, making money online, SEO, and more.
Many bloggers out there believe that to become a successful blogger, you have to get your name out there. Surely you are already doing this in some way, whether you are a very savvy internet marketer or you are a social media guru. But does it always provide you with the targeted readers that you want? What if you want more readers while having to spend less marketing? Well, let me tell you this. It is possible, and it’s already being done. You will just need to take out a few hundred $$$ out of your pockets, that’s all.
Over at my blog, I gave you a simple yet effective tip that will make you a famous blogger in no time. Surely, this is very effective since it’s the most common, fastest, and one of the most successful ways to expose your blog or anything at all. Isn’t that how your making money from your blog? Aren’t you getting paid by advertisers that want to expand their exposure by purchasing different types of ads? It works doesn’t it? So why can’t you do that? The problem is this: you don’t have the money or you just don’t want to “waste” money. But let me just tell you that it works and it’s worth it. You just have to make sure you pick the right people and sites to advertise on.
Let’s take a few case studies for example. Winning the Web is a blog run by Gyutae Park. You might already know him. But did you know him 3 months ago? Me neither. It wasn’t until he spent over $1,000 to order reviews here on John Cow as well as John Chow’s site. Yes, he used it to promote his contest and all that, but think about it. It wasn’t really about the contest. Instead, it was about marketing his blog through the means of advertising his contest. That’s exactly why he’s an internet marketer. So what did he get in return for all the money he spent? An increase in traffic, RSS subcribers, and loyal readers.
Now you might be saying, “Sly, there are always free ways to market your site, and it can give you the same results as advertising on other blogs”. Well, I do agree with you on that one. After blogging for almost 6 months now, I have never advertised on a blog or done any paid advertising whatsoever. Everything I have done is pure and free internet marketing. This method of “buy-now, get instant results” is merely for those who feel that their blog (or other type of website) is going nowhere. All I can say is, if you have the money, go ahead and advertise as much as you’d like. It’s the lazy way of internet marketing, but it sure does bring true results. :p

It’s sure possible to “buy popularity”, but you have to deliver to stay there…
Yeah completely agree and i second that and i would like to add another fact.
Take two realities in considrations before this type of marketing.
1…Buy reviews from blogs that are not VERY VERY GOOD than yours. Because the trafic which u will get from such blogs will not stay with you since they know blogs with excellent stuff in same niche. Go for GOOD blogs(not blogs with low trafic) and ask them to review so that u get trafic that WILL stay because they don’t expect that we are going on a blog that is of high standerd as john cow caz they purchased a review here .
2…Make sure u have enough content to handle visitors befor putting money in marketing. DONOT go for purchasing reviews if u have 10 posts or so
Yes it is true that you must have money to make good money but you do not need a lot, what you need is creativity.
Good points, but I don’t believe that people that pay money for advertising believe “their blog (or other type of website) is going nowhere.” I believe that if you think your blog or website is going nowhere then advertising won’t help you that much because in your mind (and perhaps this is a reality) your blog or website already sucks.
But yes, the old principle holds true. It takes money to make money. I couldn’t make money off my forums if I didn’t have the money to pay for the $160 license or the $230 a month to pay for a dedicated server. You gotta shell it out and have confidence in your ability to succeed before you consider advertising though.
Interesting post, great read of the day I might say. Keep up the good work!

that is why i am going to buy a review on john chows blog one day to promote my site http://www.livelymoney.blogspot. because I think that you get what you pay for . even though shoemoney claimed he doesnt pay for a site he still had a circle of authority which he has paid in the past. so all in all you will pay with time or money
Just imagine where you’d be if you did some paid advertising.
Nice post Sly
Yeah good write up Sly man!
I totally agree…if you have the bucks to spend, why the hell not!? There are a million ways you could kick off a new site or blog with the right budget, and the right contacts.
Just ask John Cow!
Kind of reminds me of the way Amway operated in the 80’s/90’s. “Buy this expensive pack of tools and you’ll be a diamond some day”. Today the mantra is buy this review and you’ll be a famous blogger some day.
Very good post,I like your case study and I have bookmarked your blog too
Good guest COW
It does need to take money to make money, if your want something you will have to pay for it to get the perfect quality.
The saying you need to spend to make some definitely holds true. Sure, free advertising (like Stumble Upon, Digg, Entrecard etc) will get you some traffic, but to break into the top level you need to spend money - not a lot, but some.
I’m hoping that my WordPress themes and Facebook application will bring some traffic… we’ll see.
Btw, @ Allen Money.. there are better ways to waste $450, no offense to JChow of course. And if you get what you pay for… why don’t you have your own domain?
Awesome post,
There are tons of ways to bring in money. You just have to pick the right one for you and stick with it. Making easy money is possible but it needs some work and that work must be based on the right information.
Well, you know what I could not understand the direction of your post, whether you were condemning the way of paid advertising like what Gyutae Park did or whether supporting it.
Frank C, I don’t see paid reviews as being all that bad. They are usually targeted to a specific audience and are just a marketing tool like any other form of advertising. Doing pay-per-click will hardly get you the same results and may end up costing you a fortune in the end. Why spend money on something such as PPC, that some might think as a legit way to advertise, when you can get the visitors you are looking for at a cost of a few hundred bucks? Just my thoughts.
@Affiliate Confession - What I find objectionable about them is the suggestion that they be used to promote a social blog about ‘making money online’ or ‘blogging about blogging’. It’s a poor investment because it won’t give adequate returns because the social referral visitors that you generate in this way won’t click your ads. It can generate online fame within the niche but that’s about all it will do.
that’s exactly what i’m doing and the idea behind thegeekboys, com
Yes, if you have a blog, I wouldn’t go with PPC. Unless the site you’re promoting can make you money (affiliate landing page, etc.), PPC is not the right type of advertising that is good for a blog.
good post and i agree with you Sly. It is for some people but not for others.
Hey Cow… Good post of that guest post… I enjoyed it
Good Post Sly , I think this trick will work fine
Very true, it takes money to make money. Free advertising only gets you so far. To really get into the A List either you should be ready to spend money or you should be an early adopter in a niche (like ProBlogger). I’m currently saving money so I can order reviews on a few blogs…
I’ve had a “COW” of a time reading this blog
I’ve found out the hard way over the years, hope doesn’t get you far. the money is where the hope is.
Spend it and you will be rewarded. But PPC is a steep learning curve for the n00b which will leave a whole in your pocket.!!
Many Newbie marketers are to eager to jump out of the blocks and get cracking after purchasng the latest guru guide to make oney online.
They need to do some homework and comtinue their learning in the ever changing world of Internet Marketing.
Great site…I might stay for a while longer….
Moooooooooo
nteresting post, great read of the day I might say.
Yes it is true that you must have money to make good money
@ Ruchir - What a better way to do that than to get one from Slyvisions dot Com! Just let me know if you are intersted.
It does take money to make big money but you can start with nothing.
