Want to Learn How to Build a Business Not Just a Blog.. for FREE? CLICK HERE Now to Find Out How!

So two days into the new theme and we’d done a couple of tweaks left and right to speed things up. Some of your we’re complaining about longer loading times, which is true. Beauty comes at a price! Unfortunately the awesome header we’re using is quite large in size. This could be reduced but we’d lose the crispy look.
So what did we do to try and speed up the blog a little?

  • Cutting down the number of front page posts. From 10 to 5. Quick fix.
  • Disabling all plugins that aren’t used. You’d be surprised how many plugins are activated on some blogs, but not actually used.
  • Host as many images locally as we could. This way we’re cutting out loading times from other sites.
  • We’ve enabled caching on the MySQL database. “This caches commonly used SQL queries in memory for virtually instant access by the next page that makes the same request.”

One plugin we installed that could speed up the blog more is WP-Cache. We’re not using this however because of the ad rotation we use in the sidebar and top posts. Also the MBL widget is dynamic and wouldn’t visually update.

Now some things we could do to increase performance would be removing the MBL and blogrush widgets, decreasing the header quality and making the ad spots smaller. We don’t want to do any of these because we like the way things look as they are. Who’s got a suggestion we’ve overlooked?

In other news: Miss Kumiko, you’ve won the $50 because we did use your slogan “Milking the Internet since 2007″ so we’ll be sending your cash through paypal right away, congratulations! (and go check out her new theme guys!).
Slyvisions is running a free review competition, which reminds us –You guys still have one more week to enter our $500 cash contest, Our Nintendo Wii competition or to get your hands on the free goodies from Seth Godin, Aaron Wall and Yaro Starak! Enjoy the rest of your weekend! We’re out yo. Word to your mothers. Peace!

I personally don’t mind that the page loads more slowly because I just love the design.

Anyway, how I browse is i normally turn on my reader and go through posts. Then I open links that I want to view in a new tab then view them after I’ve finished reading some the entire post (if the links are in the post) or after reading the next post.

I’ve just put a new header on my site which seems to load very slowly for the first page view - does anyone know if this caching technique help to improve that or should I be changing the .png images to another format?

It actually loads better for me since the new theme came out. Now it’s almost instant.

Oh, I finally entered that $500 giveaway. I broke down and setup a miscellaneous blog. My name wasn’t taken yet. Yay!

I still miss the cows. I didn’t get a chance to make a blue bulls joke.

Add in threaded commenting please. I got my replacement router (although it’s not new) so I am back in action but this new commenting system makes it hard for me to keep up with my daily commenting routine!

Now John Cow looks like John Boy! More like a teenage pop blog rather than a money-making blog. The cartoon character appears to be like from one of those teenage magazines, having his glass of milk before sending him to bed.The collar T-shirt, blue jeans, red-white cap, over-sized watch and red sneakers. So passe. You must be KIDing, right?!
Anyway, I like topropose a toast to your new “improved” blog with is my glass of MILK[sorry no champagne for kids!].

I think the design is great, I don’t have load time issues on my connection so it loads great. Love how you incorporated the cars.

I like your new header. It’s refreshing. It retains the character of the original but with more oomph reflecting the changing scenario in blog design recently. The changes in other sections of this blog are rather more cosmetic than anything else but that’s only my two cents. Back to the header - the spotted sport cars are fine, keeping to the cow theme. But why not show our four-legged friends in the background instead of the three other cars? We can’t miss the cows totally, can we? Just a thought.

Some of the features are too much blended into the background, hence it is difficult to detect. For example the search box, subscribe by email box and feed button.

OK, so everyone has seen my silly mug on my ad with the $500. I was going to run a contest or something but my time is locked up with PayPerPost Direct request and there just isn’t the time to do the contest thingy. The ad says $500 but you can have it at $250 - just email me at macewan@gmail.com - and yeah it is worth every penny. My traffic has gone absolutely crazy in the last few days.

i guess you didnt have any takers at 500, so now you want double for the spot. lol. ad flipping at its best, or worst. you will probably still get a taker.

I’d go for adapting the buffering/caching on certian parts on the site, where the dynamic content stays the same for long periods, you could even code it to rebuffer once a file was altered or an amount of time have past.
Let say, links to friends, menu, top commentators for let say 1-10 min I bet you could find a lot more that doesn’t change on regular bases and cache that.

Make the header a PNG. PNG’s allow for lossless compression/optimization. :D

by entering johncow/whateveryouwant-that-isnt-a-title-name
will produce that, are you performing a scam?

2007-09-23 21:15:17

Matt- Making the header (and other images) does have a few advantages, but the thing with PNG’s is that people using the old Internet Explorers will not be able to see the image.

Cow- Thanks for linking to my contest! To everyone else, don’t forget to participate!

@sly:If you are using the old IE shouldn’t you be punished and not get to see the pretty header for being too lazy to upgrade to IE 7 or FF

@sly: If people keep designing for old and obsolete browsers, the Web isn’t going to advance as quickly as it should/can.

What the heck is up with that Macewab guy. He has an ad block that says $500. I clicked it and there wasn’t any mention of $500 anywhere. I clicked on the other ad too, and it just went to the exact same place. Don’t those things cost $125 each? Why would you buy two? And if you did buy two, why would you just stick a picture of your head one them, with a random number on one and your name on the other. I just don’t get it.

Angel,

It looks to me like he’s selling the second spot for $500, but from a comment earlier it looks like the price has dropped to $250.

They cost $125 if you buy from the Milk Man, but the spots are gone. So the prices go up. *L*

Of course, I could be mistaken.

2007-09-24 14:40:10

Matt and King Jacob, I totally agree with you guys and I SURELY don’t use IE. It is obsolete and should not be used anymore. What I am talking about is that if many of your readers still use IE (by looking at your stat counter like Analytics). It is important that you let them see the images and design that others can see, which is all I’m saying. If, according to your stat analytics, your blog doesn’t have much readers using IE, then it would be a good idea to opt-in for file types like PNG.

I use IE and Firefox both and I can see .png fine. Granted, I can’t see ‘em in IE if they have a partial transparency. If older version of IE can’t see it at all then at the very least they need to be encouraged to upgrade to a later version.

Shoot, encourage your readers to install Firefox, put the Adsense button up and make some cash while you’re at it.
