Search Engine Traffic Tips

This post is part of the guest blogger experiment.

I don’t view myself as a SEO expert or Making Money expert by any means. I do have a few tricks I’ve learned on bringing in some search engine traffic.

I feel the first thing you need to do is change your permalinks. Wordpress users go to Options -> Permalinks, and change it to custom and type in this “/%postname%” without the quotes. The next thing you need to do if you’re looking for some traffic is to download All in One SEO Plugin. This works perfect, each article you post will have its own description when searching on Google. Here are two examples of what I’m talking about.

Notice how the URL of my article is different than the Title listed on Google. Also, the first sentence or two is the start of the description. If you were not to use this plugin every article you had on the search engines would have the default description you gave your blog when you first started blogging.

I have gotten quite a few visits on the Barry Bonds article since he just broke the record. I had that article written prior to him breaking it. All I had to do, as I was watching him round the bases, was change some minor things about that day. That page has gotten 200+ views from search engines in the first few days (Aug. 8th – 12th).

Sunday, the 12th, I posted a Tiger Woods PGA Champion article the second his putt dropped on the 72nd hole because I had that ready also. Planning and being first is a good way to get to the top of Search Engines. Think about it, how many titles on the internet or urls had “Tiger Woods Wins 2007 PGA Championship” before he won it? None, How many had it the second he finished his round? ONE (ME). I can’t wait to see if my plan worked this time also.

Here is my best example of gaining traffic, and adsense revenue, through google. The Sony Camera article has gotten almost 1,000 Uniques in one month. I did make the title a little long but look at all of the keywords that are in the title. If you’re researching a video camera you’re going to use those words in some combination. Look at the google description, it’s the first sentence plus on my article. I think that first sentence is golden to a person researching. “positives and negatives” was perfect and I didn’t realize it at the time. Here is a list of keywords that folks have visited this article with.

Since these articles have been bringing in most of the search engine traffic I have gone back and tweaked them a bit with some more ads and links. I did not have those videos on the Sony article from the start. The videos have increased the “time of visit” on my site which could increase other page visits and subscriptions.

I hope this helped some of you that may not have looked at search engines in this fashion. I have started to plan more about my articles and find new things happening in the world. The sports articles are kind of easy since you know they will happen, you’re just not sure when. If something doesn’t happen, so what delete that draft. The sony article was great since this camera just came out a month or two prior to me buying it.

cool post, the seo plugin for wordpress is great.

Using that and a few other tips I have picked up, I am getting decent traffic from Google at the moment.

One keyword that is working well for me at the moment is ‘iPhone UK’.

Good solid tips. I like the part about developing the page BEFORE an event, that way you can take advantage of the searches for that term.

Great advice. I am using wordpress seo manager. Been pretty happy with it as it gives you options to set meta and nofollow as well as the features discussed above. I hope that I can get the luck Browie has with his site. Thanks!

I would also suggest the role of social bookmarking.

Some of the social bookmark sites may definitely improve your ranking with most Search Engines. (and they’re free).

Just bookmark the articles yourself first to kick off the snow ball.

Google seems to especially value links from some social bookmark sites like Netvouz or MisterWong:

as soon as you post a link there, it’s acknowledged by Google bots. free backlinks –> better rank in seach queries.

Good idea, just be careful with Digg they banned me. All i did with digg ever was digg stories and input my own stories. :( I’m so sad.

Does anyone rank REAL high for a keyword or phrase that links to their blog like my Sony article? It’s funny how people come to your site from weird keywords.
