Remember September – What We Made Online

It’s been three whole months since we decided to join in on this silly little thing called “Blogging”. Who would have thought that we’d be making money online, 4 figures to be exact, instantly with nothing more than a missing H in our domain name and some cow puns to show for. Our previous end of month recaps are here for July and August so you can do some comparing. Here’s the breakdown of some sexy stats and easy earnings we made in our third month online, September 2007.

september_stats.jpg

  • Unique Visitors – 28,345. Yes we know, the number is down by over 50% from the previous two months. This month however it’s all targeted traffic and no more Digg quantity. July and August shared a massive surge of traffic between them as Digg happened just at the end of July and beginning of August.
  • Pageviews – 409,366. Again, without Diggers who do one page per visit, this time the targeted visitors had an amazing 8,3 pageviews per visit!
  • Bandwidth Used – 18,85GB. That’s weird isn’t it? Less visitors, more bandwidth utilized. Guess it has to do with the new theme..
  • Technorati stats – 2,905. The higher we get, the harder it gets. Lets see if we can conquer a spot in the top 1000 next month!
  • Alexa Stats – 15,757. Yes, we’re impressed too. The Alexa graph seems to keep climbing. Another indication that Digg traffic really isn’t all that –the 70k spikes on Alexa are smaller than our current 28k. We’ve got quality traffic now baby!
  • Community Members – 667. Thanks to Remo who made that amount +1 from 666 according to MBL. We’d hate to be called evil!
  • Blog Stats – There are currently 170 posts and 5,967 comments, contained within 14 categories. That’s nearly 2000 new comments this month, and Steven was offline for most of the time!
  • RSS Subscribers – 506. One of our personal goals was to get the amount over 500. Guess we did it! Thanks to all of you that faithfully subscribe to our daily dairy updates!
  • untitled-1.jpg

  • Random Cool Stuff – We got to become the lucky owners of the hottest blog theme out there. A big thank you to Hyder from Weborithm for this amazing design! – We we’re guests on the ShoeMoney Show! – We won a PS3 from Darin.

‘Yeah yeah cows, bring on the interesting stuff, how much did you guys manage to rake in this month?’

Fine, ok, whatever. Guess we’re a money making blog and all you guys care about is how much of the greens we made. Here goes:

  • Google Adsense – $57.68. It’s still the dairy and soya products that are killing us. Doesn’t matter, We got rid of Google’s prime spot about two weeks ago.
  • Text Link Ads – $255. With the sales of 10 links and a couple of affiliates signing up through us, this isn’t a bad number considering we’re still showing as a pagerank 0.
  • DealDotCom – $65,72. Every little bit helps!
  • Reviews – $725. One review was partially paid with a service, hence the uneven amount.
  • Milk Received – ~$25.Obviously we still don’t look like we really need it. *cough cough*
  • Private Ad Sales – $750+$60+$425 = $1235,00. Thanks to the new design, there are more opportunities to generate income. A major impact on this months revenue! There are still 5 300×250 spots available for the top post if you’re interested. The rest of our advertising package is overbooked.
  • Other Income – $975. This contains the $175 dedicated server we’re getting for free from the great people over at Micfo.com They also sponsored another $500 contest. Don’t forget to use the coupon “JohnCowRocks” to get 15% off on any hosting product you buy! The rest is the Nintendo Wii ($250) and $50 game voucher that CellforCash kindly put up as a prize.

Total earnings for September: $3,338.40

Nice! And we were aiming for the 2k barrier! There is a slight change of plans from this month going forward. We know we used to give away half of our advertising earnings, but since we quit our day jobs, we really can’t afford to give away such a chunk of cash anymore. The blog money is now what pays for our rent, food and clean underwear. We hope you understand. To make up for this month’s winner’s loss, we’ll be giving them a free review worth $200, and an ad spot in the RSS feeds. Browie, we hope you won’t mind but you won this month!

Well done Mr Moo, You really are a Dot Com Moogul

Keep up the good work

  9. fatgadget says:

PS you didn’t include your MEW earnings ? or is it only income from this site that you include ?

  10. John Cow says:

The earnings are only JohnCow, no other sites :)

  11. Contest Beat says:

Dang, there’s another $5K+ right there

  12. krillz says:

cow, how about you eating the nutrition rich grass here in Sweden, for a small fee I’ll host you :P

  14. Israel says:

    good job, cool numbers.

  15. James Wilcox says:

Nicely done. You have proven once again that quality traffic matters and the way you get it is by having quality content. More importantly, I think you are writing about what you want to write about and not blogging about making money just to make money. Keep it up.

  16. Bolehan says:

    keep mooing!!!

  17. John Chow says:

Not giving half to the readers anymore?

  18. Joyce Babu says:

Reinstall the threaded comments plugin and you will see steven back in action :)

  19. Olivier says:

Yes, you will need the increase in cash flow since the dollar keeps declining with respect to the euro. You also need to make up for that.

  20. Contest Beat says:

    We need threaded comments.

And what’s this about giving half to readers?

  21. Word Hugger says:

You should donate your 50% to charity, rather than your readers.

You are still making $1500+/m from this blog, as well as your $5800+ from MEW. I think you can spare a nice donation. I suggest kiva.org

  22. John Cow says:

Word Hugger: The blog is our source of income. We’re unemployed.

  23. Matt Jones says:

Are you going to update your advertising page so it shows the real amount of traffic?

  24. John Cow says:

Matt, already done. 70+70+30=170k That’s roughly 55k average per month.

  25. Not that you need any help but I’m one of your TLA advertisers and to date you’ve been by far my best value for money. If you’re looking for an affordable TLA link that referrs visitors then the Cow is the place to be.

  26. KingJacob says:

As the cows “unemployed” I think its fine that he didnt give a portion to a reader.

  27. browie says:

    OH WOW

That’s awesome that i won the top commentator prize this month. That prize is probably better than the previous months. I’m super excited. I need to clean up my blog a little so it looks nice for THE COW

WoW on the traffic and money you’re making.

  28. Hey is this a misprint
    DealDotCom – $65,72. Should it be $65.72?

  29. Just goes to show I need to put some effort into private ad sales this month. I have the engine ready to power my sites, just need to finish the job!

  30. krillz says:

cow, what plans do you have after million€wiki to secure the $5K?
As I see it the sales will just drop decrease after some time as the buzz dies down.

Or are you planning on the blog taking over that cut by the time that happens?

  31. Congrats Cow, doing a great job. Keep it up

  32. John Cow says:

Krillz: Not sure what you mean? The money from MEW is mostly being spend on marketing the site. It’s not profit like some people seem to think.

  33. krillz says:

ow okey, I didn’t know that, cool :D
Also I wonder who bought the millionpesowiki, that’s just hilarious

  34. madringo says:

    Not too bad Mr. Cow!

  35. Congrats! Now that’s a lot of money for a blog that just started out in this world. If you keep up this level of increase in earnings you will be soon earning more than johnchow ;) moo’ luck everyone

  36. charles says:

Not bad Cow! not bad for a 3 month old blog. Way to go Cow. keep it up.

  37. Excellent figures….. multiplied income wow.

  38. I think it’s great you’re making money and I find it amusing that so many people want to tell you how to spend it….I say the site is great and you deserve it.

I’m giving away that Nintendo Gameboy Advance SP now….you oughta enter with your winning streak there….

  39. Andy Spark says:

You berated Tyler for trying to make $150 off his readers?

Well you just went back on a published offer to give $1,669.20 to your readers by saying you aren’t gonna give away half your month’s earnings. Sure, you’re gonna give them a $200 review free, but they’re still losing out on $1,469.20 – almost TEN TIMES the amount you screwed at Tyler for cheating his readers out of.

Now, I’m betting quite a few were followers of this blog because of that prize money – I’m betting they feel quite scammed. Hypocrites.

  40. Andy Spark says:

*Cough*hypocrites*cough*: “Just imagine us telling whoever wins the $500 cash competition that it didn’t go as well as we’d like and we’re deciding to keep $400 for ourselves. We’d end up on someones BBQ for sure!”

  41. Andy Spark says:

Ok, I just re-read it and realized you were only giving away half of your ad earnings, not the total month’s earnings. Yes, I’m triple posting but I know that you would hit back at me for misquoting the $1,500 I said earlier anyway.

However, the point is still very much there – you pretended to give away a one prize then suddenly withdrew the promised prize and gave an alternative which the blog followers were not expecting or probably even wanted that much.

Shucks, that winner must feel happy?

At least you would have got £100 from the iPhone competition. Yet you spent a whole blog entry complaining only to do the same to your readers.

  42. Etienne Teo says:

that is a cool report too..everyone is doing well with their private sales i see!

  43. Mr. Rajawang says:

    hello? remember the ashwin case?

  44. fryman says:

Hey Andy, are you Tyler’s dad?

    lmao!

  45. ij says:

0 to 67k uniques in a month? How? What’s the breakdown of that traffic, between digg/google organic/linking sites etc?

Nice effort! I’ve been blogging longer and make far less heh

  46. Andy Spark says:

No fryman, I’m not. Otherwise my name would be Andy Cruz. Duh.

Just pointing out a huge contradiction which Cow went on a hissy fit about when they didn’t receive their iPhone. And they effectively said themselves that they’d get huge criticism if they tried to pull off a similar stunt. And now they have – just after calling someone else out for keeping a cut of some money. Well, now they’re doing the same by lying about a potential cut of money prize and then keeping the cut of money themselves. Bad, bad timing, eh?

Cow lied and is planning to withhold money just like Tyler – the only difference is that Cow is keeping more money than Tyler even wanted from each of his readers. Cow claims to be all about it’s readers and not using the blog as a ruthless business like Tyler did – keeping money it said it’d give to it’s readers (thus keeping readers hanging around clicking the ads) seems pretty ruthless to me.

Oh and fryman, I actually hate what Tyler did to his readers. I’d really like a mascot for something I’m planning and $500 is extortionate. So I am no way on his side at all. In fact, I’m hardly gonna believe a word he says anymore. But now Cow has proved to be a hypocrite, I’m not gonna believe a word from this site either in regards to competitions (and everything else is losing a little credibility too) and I’d hope that no-one else does either – especially if the prize is money.

  47. DotDriven says:

I have to agree with Andy on this. Although I can completely understand needing the extra cash to live on now, it doesn’t mean integrity should be forfited. Sure, changing the rules for the future is fine and understandable but up until now those that were part of it were under the impression that it was going to be what was posted. And Andy has a point about calling out Tyler and then skimping on your readers as well. I thought Tylers move was cheesy but also think this is a bit sketchy.

Seems one thing any up and coming wannabe “pro blogger” really gets from visiting the big name blogs is learn how to take advantage of your readers as much as possible as long as you make a buck while doing it. It gets to where you always have to wonder how much of the info is really helpful and how much of it is just propaganda to put more money into their pockets using the readers.

I still like you Bob and you are definitely not the only one to “milk” their readership for every drop of revenue possible (pretty much all the big boys do it too) but on your way up be sure to stop and take stock of your path and make sure you keep the integrity. Loyal readers like to feel they are appreciatecd and not just being used…even if they are lol.

  48. YC says:

Well done, Cow! Especially in just 3 months! :)

  49. John Cow says:

AndySpark and DotDriven: Winning an iPhone and just getting $100 offered in the end is hardly something you can compare to not giving away the money that now pays for rent, food and clothes. Sure, we could have said that the prize was gonna change as soon as we announced that we quit our job and that we were trying to make a living online, but somehow we were hoping our readers could put 2 and 2 together.

You can climb out of your tree and stop sniping cows now. You’ve made your point and we hope you feel better.

Oh, and since you keep going on about the Tyler drama. He tried to actively take his readers money by having them pay more, we’re not. We simply changed what we used to give away for free anyway. We’re still giving someone something worth over $200 for nothing.

  50. Mr. Rajawang says:

If I am the cow, I will say sorry, give the original prize and start a new rules from no onwards.. surely a cow will live on his words?

“..rent, food and clothes” – I thought cow don’t need clothes! there is plenty of grass to eat! They are renting room for cow now?

  51. zaki says:

In 1 year, I bet you can be on par or maybe better than John Chow, who knows?
