Make Your Applications Work Together to Work Better For You (For Free!)
When you started your online business, there were probably a hundred little tasks that didn’t take up much time, but needed to be done. Now, as your business has become more successful and demand has increased, those little tasks are taking up way too much of your time. You’re looking at buying new software to help you save time, but it’s all so expensive. Before you invest money into any more software, take a look at the software you have and how you can make it work better for you.
How?
The secret is to make all your different applications work together.
How?
By using plug-ins (not WordPress plugins) to merge your applications and make them work together, more efficiently, for you.
How?
Hold your horses, I’m getting to that part!
By utilizing plug-ins, you can streamline your processes. Before, you would have to take information out of one program and manually input it into another. With these programs, you can get the applications to send the information straight from the first into the second. As your online business grows and small tasks become multiplied by a thousand, this can save you a ton of time. The more business you get, the more time you can save.
There are many different kinds of technologies available to make software programs share information. Some cost tens of thousands of dollars a year (guess who makes that one? It’s one word and starts with M), but there are many open-source programs available at low-to-no cost for the budget-constrained small online business owner. The more popular a program is, and the more a program is used in conjunction with another, the greater the chances that there is an open-source plug-in available for free.
Datasync http://www.datasyncsuite.com – open-source application that links up other open-source software, such as Joomla and Zimbra; enables you to access them all with a single sign on. Cost – Free to download, available also at about $40 a month per user for a hosted version that comes with tech support.
Jitterbit http://www.jitterbit.com – open-source program that can merge a variety of programs and databases. Uses a helpful drag-and-drop interface. Cost – free to download, goes up to a pricy $10,000 or higher for a version with tech support.
Snaplogic http://www.snaplogic.org – open-source program designed to connect web-based application to other web-based or desktop applications. Cost – free to download, again, getting a little pricy for support, starting at $7,500 a year.

I started actually writing a lot of software for myself recently. Langauges such as python and lisp make it easy to write simple programs suited to your needs. It has taken me a while but I find writing my own software a really useful skill and it’s saved me a lot of money.
Hi John
I’ve come across a free software programme called ToDoList and without planning to use it this way it’s turned into my ‘pc dashboard’
I write articles; structure books; copy important training emails and have started linking up to all the files and weblinks I use.
It can be found here: http://lifehacker.com/400577/todolist-handles-subtasks-galore
It’s still semi-developed but works great on my Vista laptop. Saving me loads of time.
Hmm lots have happened. I’d been away for my wedding but this….seems good. Still to go through though!!!

i have learnt few things. will give it a try!!!
Software I agree it’s a time saver but I am a slow learner and some of that open source stuff defeats me… but I will take a look! Thank You.
Interesting stuff John, but I am not sure that Datasync works with Joomla quite yet (just an fyi
). I definitely had no idea stuff like this even existed… so thanks a lot for getting me back in the loop!
Definitely something to keep in mind for the future. Though I agree that I am not sure yet exactly how they would be used … probably would have to actually play around with them to see. But I am not sure if they directly apply to any tools I am using presently. Hard to tell without trying them I guess.

The Holy Grail!
One of my biggest peeves has been trying to juggle information back and forth between unrelated programs that each had information that I needed to put together.
If these can do that for the programs I use, it will be wonderful!
My son complained yesterday that I always have so many tabs and windows open on my laptop. I so this because I usually work on several things at the same time.If one of these tools can save me some time and trouble, I’ll be in heaven. Thanks a lot.
Adwords Digger….Great simple tool.
Who can beat the price?? Seems to me that some of the best tools out there, like Google Keywords tool, are free.
The potential power that this tool can have in traffic and cost/click is really something. Deffinately worth playing around with.
You know what would be handy too?
I run adsense on my site. It would be really cool if I could optimize the ads displayed, top CTR only.
Thanks JohnCow!
