Major News – The Cow is Heading Out to Pasture
| Share |
In spring of 2008 I purchased Johncow from Bob Jones (hard to believe its been over two years now) and over the past two years I have had LOADS of fun…. but sadly, all good things come to an end eventually.
Now before anyone starts to make an assumption… no this is not the end of my blogging career… in fact it is probably better labeled as the rebirth.
You see Johncow was originally created back in 2007 as a twist on the infamous JohnCHOW.com and when it came up for sale I thought it would be a great opportunity to get into the blogging side of this business.
The time has come however that Johncow is not relevant to my business direction anymore.
When I took over johncow, there was only 1200 RSS subscribers, now there are over 30 000. We have created an ebook, lots of blogging series and competitions, been featured in a bunch of ebooks and on blogs and have had loads of fun… but its time for a change.
It has become discouraging when I bust my ass off to provide good content and I read a comment from someone that says this blog is just a mockery of someone else, that it is riding on the shirt tales of someone else or when people call me John… my name is Jason
In fact I was talking with Carl over at http://www.carlocab.com/ (aka the kidblogger) and he agreed with me, its time for a change.
So over the next month we will be transitioning Johncow.com to a new domain and a new look and a new goal… and I am going to be giving away some amazing stuff.
Now for an important statement…
I will NOT be selling johncow.com!
It is going to redirect to my new blog, so sorry for anyone wanting it (if any of you would want it anyway)
Over the next few weeks I have some excellent content that i am going to be adding here and got some cool things we are going to be doing. One of which is a final KICK ASS competition with some KICK ASS PRIZES.
So we can look at this as kind of a farewell party of the Cow and a grand opening celebration for my new blog.
Oh and no i am not telling you the new domain yet… but will very soon.
So with that said… what’s your thoughts?

Smart move, from what I’ve read I get the feeling your passion is really in creating the systems/software to help others and that couldn’t be any more different from what John Chow does (not knocking John, what he does works for him).
Looking forward to some great new/different content.
I’ve been with you a long time and I think it’s a smart move as well. I have no doubt that the rebranding will be just as successful, if not more. Congrats on the decision and good luck!
Jason,
Looking forward to the new site. It’s cool to see that you are going in more of a direction of branding yourself and what you are all about.
I have to admit; I always thought the “John Cow” thing was a little gimmicky, once I learned more about who you were and what you really do my opinion quickly changed.
~Brian
Looking forward for the “rebirth” brother!
Sad to see the site come to an end but I’m glad to hear you’re starting up another. It’s been a great run!
Jason,
Good move – Can’t wait to see the new digs!
Good move, and there will always be someone wanting to start drama. Like they say misery loves company. Keep doing your thing; I have learned a lot from your blog and look to continue to do so.
Hi Jason, I kind of suspected this was on the cards when you were away for so long. Kind of amazed that you’re not selling up ( as opposed to out!) but good for you.
For the record I never subscribed to the John Chow site
Looking forward to the change. I agree that it’s time and I think it’s going to help a lot. Having a domain so close to CHOW was a great way to get the blog started and rise to quick fame, but that has run its course.
I think this is a solid decision, Jason – looking forward to the new domain and the new “you”. I’m guessing you’ll keep the same feedburner feed & mailing lists?
Awesome, can’t wait to see the new blogsite and what I’m going to win!
Errr, I mean what SOMEBODY is going to win!
I went through a re-branding myself about a year ago from OctoGrafico.com to AimItMedia.com … I got tired of business people telling me my logo was “cute & creative” but then not getting any business from them (I mainly work with local small businesses).
I’ve been taken much more seriously since the name change and I hope you see the great results.
Good move I’d say, your content and your personality definitely speak for themselves, might as well give it a name thats “you”
I wish you the best of luck in your transition (I’m sure it will go off smoothly) just don’t forget to setup the htaccess file correctly so all your old links and rss feeds that are floating around redirect as well
If you have any kind of “grand opening” announcement you would like sent out I’d be happy to pop a message out anywhere that I can when the time comes, keep us posted.
Hey John (oh I mean Jason)…its been a great journey with johncow.com….
Question I would Like to ask Myself….
Q.Who told me about PPC world, Affiliate world, Making Money Online Etc….
Its johncow.com …in my early days….I gave a visit to your site….And i liked the Theme-CowBoy telling me how to make money online…..
Jason, behind every brand and every business there is a human person that makes it successful. You, Jason (John, TK, W2M, etc..) introduced me to many great products and I learned a lot from you.
I wish you, Jason, good luck in any thing you do and keep doing what you doing because you do it well.
Congrats on the new direction. I agree its time for a change..
Look forward to seeing the new look.
Hey Jason,
I’ve been following your blog since the end of last year, and I always wondered where you got your blog name from. =P
Getting refocused and taking your business in a new direction is always an exciting time. I’m excited to see which way you’re taking it and wish you the best!
Have a good weekend,
Tyson
I liked the spoof on the name. You never directly lampooned John Chow’s site. It was and is cute. I do not see it as a negative. If anything, it probably sends more traffic to Mr. Chow.
Whats the new site going to be called?
Hey Jason,
John Chow? Who the bleep is John Chow? Sure, I’ve heard the name, but I’ve been following JohnCow.com since the beginning.
I think it’s pretty lame of someone to actually go out and legally have their name changed to John Chow just so they can ride on the coat tails of “The Cow.”
I would have thought, Jason, that you wouldn’t give a s**t what others say.
But anyway, I AM looking forward to details about your new blog.
Jason,
I downloaded the ebook around the time when it came out. That ebook is responsible for changing the global view of my own blogs, which I had been blogging on since 2006.
I look forward to seeing the new domain.
Good luck with the new domain name. Keep me posted.
Thanks
Jason Berkes
Best wishes on the big move!
As the Byrds once sang, “to everything there is a season…turn, turn, turn…and a time for every purpose under heaven” (It’s in the Bible too for anyone who cares) Johncow.com has had its “season” and has served its purpose, so it’s time to “turn, turn, turn” Looking forward to the new direction, Jason. Best of luck!!
If you are still undecided about a domain name for your new blog I have schmex.com and I would consider selling it
All the best!
Jason…I really enjoy your blog & all the great info I get from it…I look forward to your new blog & believe in my heart it will be more successful than the Cow…Thanx for everything see you on the other side…Kenney
I think this is a good idea if anything just to prove you are not “riding on the shirt tales of someone else”…although, I personally think it was a strong strategic move for you to buy this site instead of it being some type of “mockery”. I mean the fact you saw this opportunity and moved quickly on it shows you already knew a lil something about this business
Jason, there will always be haters and even when we prove them wrong that in itself will just give them more to hate…
Well, I am new to John Cow as of yesterday, and I got the spin off of John Chow name–but I really enjoy the keywords tool I downloaded & wish you the best in re-branding. I’ll miss John Cow though–made me smile in a serious world known as *online*–whimsical memories of John Cow will remain.
I wish you the best of luck in your transition. It has been great following you for about a year. Looking forward to the rest…
If you have the feeling it’s the right time to make a move, then it probably is.
Out of all the “Make Money Online” sites, this has definitely provided the best content. Wishing you the best of luck with your new ventures.
Cheers
LJP
Ahhhh … all is now revealed! I thought Jason going around calling himself John was a “Canadian” thing
Looking forward to the new blog – you can use my name for the domain if you want
I don’t care what you call your website (as long as I can find it), I’ll follow. Best wishes for your new venture. There are so few people that can be trusted for good information. Glad I found you.
I’m very happy for you. You do whatever you think is best to move forward in your business.
Bold move, but a smart one!
Look forward to seeing your new ‘home’ when announced!
Jeromy
Now that was an interesting way to announce
Hi Jason,
Personally I liked the John Cow persona. Your style and the cow made sense to me. It is always best to go with what feels the best, so the whole herd is looking forward to what you will do next.

One Suggestion……Please keep the New BLOG themed….You Know What i want to Say….
Hello Jason… I will be sorry to see the old blog go, it started around the time of my gogvo review site!
But your the product so to speak not the title of a blog you write on!
So I for one will happily move over to the new site, and follow your content there! Good luck…
Wow, looking forward to it!
Good luck to you and I’m amazed that people have dissed you for working so hard to give such good advice and such helpful content. A blessing on your head!

Hi Jason,
I only called you John once before I found your real name.
I think that I’ll miss the cow but as long as you continue giving great value on the new domain I’ll be happy.
I think that in he end the move will be positive for everybody and so it’s a good thing this change is taking place.
Perhaps you can write a post about how you redirected everything. That would be very interesting, at least for me.
All the Best and see you on your new domain and blog.
Vance
I read this on my Blackberry yesterday and was definitely shocked, but I too agree that this will be a great move for you in the long run. Once you get over the initial hiccup in traffic (and hopefully you can smooth that w/ the contest you are proposing)… I’m sure you’ll be back to action with a fresh new brand.
Good luck! I’ll be sure to stick by you
Looking forward to your new endeavor at the new site. Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us.
Good luck with the domain change, everything should work out great for you.
Good luck with your transition! It is good that you have the strength to follow your intuition and make the change. Not everyone would be so courageous!
It’s hard to believe that for about 2 years you’ve been building on some else’s brand. I can’t imagine how you must have felt trying to talk like John to keep up with the brand JohnCow! Any way you’ve tried your best. I definitely shows you can do it better if you do it your own way. So we look forward to some greater outing!
Hmm, good idea for keeping http://www.johncow.com. why try to build from bottom up again!
Hey man..good luck on your move..I too learned a lot here…glad you’ll keep on blogging…
Good luck Jason.
I’ve been following your blog for a couple of years now and I hope you’ll be back soon to enlighten us all once again.
Sorry to see the cow go. But I think I can understand where you’re coming from. I’ve been there myself.
Goodluck
Bob
Hi Jason,
So the chow is over. I have been reading your posts for along time, you inspired me to blog myself.
Good luck with the new domain name.
Pete
Hey wat You will be Doing with your current Theme..??
I’m not personally big fan of John Chow but when I see the name John Cow, it’s eventually attract me and I thought I’m heading over some type of funny site but I must say this is fantastic site with great contents. I’m really looking forward for the farewell party and hope I can win something here, first time.
awww! thats sad . i’ll miss the blog but im pretty much excited for the big one coming !
I am very happy to read your articles, more useful for me especially
I have the same thing with you. I am so very petrified of this in my lectures
I will still read your blog Jason for the useful info
. Thanks for doing what you do.
It is a sad thing to work hard and not get the credit that you have earned. It is crazy, you work hard to get somewhere, and when you get there, people thing you are riding on the coat tails of others.
The johncow.com was a little take off from johnchow, but some people just don’t get it. Your content is original and not a ripped off from John Chow, however, a name that is so similar, can hurt you.
When I started Spunky Jones. I just liked the name, it is catchy. However, many people told me that in certain parts of the world, it meant something in sexual terms. That haunted me for a long time, but I continued to keep blogging. However, it could be a factor why the blog isn’t that popular yet. Hard to tell. So, in a way, I am kinda in the same boat if the name has a negative reaction with people.
Glad that your not throwing in your blogging towel. And I hope that you are successful with your new venture.
Where u have gone……??? Can you Giveaway the current theme?i want to use it with some modifications….
Well at least you didnt get sued by John Chow.
