Love Your Sheep

Once upon a time, in a land far, far away…we all know that if you would find a magic lamp, you’d rub it so a genie pops out and asks you for your three wishes. Now the first wish that comes to mind is probably;” I want to become filthy rich!”, which is understandable because being rich is nothing to be ashamed of.
But, since there’s no such things as magic lamps or talking horses, you’re gonna have to find something else to rub and I suggest you keep it clean.

The 21st century has it’s own magic lamp and it’s called “The Internet” and you are your own genie.
In order for those old fashioned lamps to lit up, you had to fill them up with lamp oil. So you were actually putting something in them to get something out of it, right? Well that hasn’t changed over the years.

BIGGER IS BETTER.

If you want your blog to become successful, really all you have to do is get it noticed by loads of people. Obviously you need to create quality cowtent, which you will if you take pride in your work, but there is real strength in numbers. People are like the sheep we see across the road from our paddock, always sticking together and if one starts running, they all do. Once your herd of readers is large enough there’s not much you can do wrong. Because it’s such a big group, new sheep will gladly follow thus increasing your size once more.

There’s a number of blogs I could link back to right now, pointing out the sheep phenomena, where people praise and worship the bloggers every written word. It doesn’t matter if what he or she wrote is complete bullshit, they’re like horoscope’s. There’s always something in it for someone. Besides, if so many other sheep agree, you can’t stick your head out of the crowd. It might get chopped off. Like in real life, it’s mainly status that seems to matter, bigger is better. Anyway, we’re wandering off the subject.

PICK A TARGET.

If you’re blogging for moooney, one essential thing you must do is invest. Not just time but also money. “Wait a minute, you’re saying I have to spend money in order to make money?”. Yes that’s right, you will want to get yourself noticed, after all, the money you are going to be making is from your readers, clicking ads. There’s plenty of ways to spend your budget on advertising and marketing.

Or do what I did recently, I’ve put JohnCow.com up for sale on Sitepoint’s marketplace and received nearly 700 unique visitors from them alone in the past few days. This was a welcome side effect to the sale and it may have cost me $20 but the ROI (return on investment) was worth it, a targeted audience of Internet savvy users and marketeers that is now aware of this blog and tell their friends. And of course, there’s always the possibility that someone makes us an offer we can’t refuse.

Interesting points and well written. Most of the make money online blogs are nothing but a big hype through which the blogger hopes to make some money.

Indeed, a very good post. I want to add to what SEO Guru said. A lot of these blogs were started when the ‘Make Money Online” phenomenon wasn’t even at a feverish pitch as it is now. One ’sheep’ sees another make it big, and wants to do the same thing. Then another. And yet another. The result is what you see today. Moral of the story: try to be the first sheep in anything that you do. Unless it’s bad. Then be the last sheep. :)

Really dig JohnCow.com. Excellent posts all round but a little apprehensive to know that you may be selling off this juicy piece of a blog if you get the right offer in such a short time. This blog is hot and I’m sure there’ll be a number of interested parties ready to supply you with huge buckets of premium milk. But the question is: Will it be the same as now? To milk or not to milk?

Don’t worry, we’re not selling unless Google comes knocking with a big bag of hay!

A very ingenious, hilarious and entertaining parody. And also very meticulously done.

Once it’s sold the milk may not taste the same again. We’ll have to switch to mutton for our daily meal.
