Sometimes people just can’t read between the lines and we have to try and make our request clear in any other way we can. We have tried to say it a few times in the comments and even added an extra paragraph to an existing post, but the message does not seem to get across so here’s a special post for two of our favorite readers, CoolioJones and Mahdi Yusuf:

and so I am missing 2 days worth of valuable data. Damn. So what have I learned about contests thus far? Make your rules very clear. Make your prize clear. Make sure it is clear when the end date is. If your contest is about the most comments, expect comment spam. Submit your contest to all the contest blog sites such as mine. Here is a handy list of other sites to submit to. My site isn’t on there, but we are new… maybe they will add us. Have I won anything?
I’m actually surprised they aren’t right here waiting to spam on this post.

When I saw 1 Comment I figured it had to be one of them.
This was not the intentions of the contest, to have a HUGE disparity between the 1st and 2nd positions, and the rest of the gang. I felt WAY more comfortable when the numbers were lower! But anyway, I want to apologize to everyone for having to look at my name repeatedly, never meant for it to happen like that. Now let’s get back to the real purpose of the site, building a great community!

When you run a cash competition based upon the number of comments, what did you expect?
We had put in the post that spammy comment s would be mooderated. This seemed a better solution than to just delete comments.
I think you’d be better of just picking a random person at a random time near the end of the month for winning.
You just opened it up to be gamed.

holy crap that is a lot of comments. i don’t think i make that many on all the blogs i read. oh well that is the nature of the beast when contests are involved.

Heh, spammers on blogs get very annoying. Man i saw there comment count and holy crap you can tell they’ve been up to spamming!
I will admit, I’m kind of glad something was said about this. I am subscribed to the comments and when I get 30 emails an hour, all just from 2 people posting..did get a little bit frustrating
What will you do about the top 2 spammers? And how will this affect the 50% split from advertising profits? Cause clearly these 2 don’t deserve it from spamming because no one will be able to catch up with them unless they spam like them. Will you just give the 50% split to the 3rd person???
I vote giving it to me because I thought John Chow was splitting his profits, not John Cow!!
my intention was never to spam, it wasn’t as if i was trying to raise, up my sites, value, i really enjoy the community and i was trying to build up in that manner, but if you considered it spamming you could have kindly sent me an email, and i would have gladly, decreased the number of comments, and the only reason i have so much posts its because of the contest, which i was participating. i found it to be very rude, and since you have clearly knocked me and coolio out of the running other people have started to raise there commenting, as a result, basically the lesser of two evils!

Come on, you two guys were nearly at 100 comments each, third runner up did not have 20% on you guys. Surely that should have said something?
well you have to keep in mind, i almost had double the comments of everyone else before the comments it wasn’t like i kicked it up, when other people, started. for example coolio. i was an excited member from the beginning, not just when they contest started! i just think you went about it the wrong way is all.

That’s what we had in mind. We won’t tell how and where but at the end of the month we pick a subscriber and reward him or her with either a cashprize of 50% from our earnings or a evenly valuable gadget.
