How to Set Goals
| Share |
Before all the new tools and promotion vehicles come into play, you need to figure out quite a few things. Like who your company is. And what your goals are. And when you want to achieve them. And why people should listen to you and not somebody else. In short, you need to concentrate on the content before you can start figuring out where it’s going to go.
So, what are your business goals?
Do you have a product or service that you’re trying to sell or are you trying to gain a subscription base, paid or otherwise?
Are you trying to sell a membership to something?
Trying to raise money for charity or simply trying to drive targeted traffic to your site to enable you to charge other companies for advertising?
Now write down those goals in details.
What are your short-term and long-term goals for your site? This will help you figure out what to concentrate on, and make it the basis of your communication strategy.
Here’s what you need to figure out:
- Where you want your business to be in 6 months, 1 year, and 5 years.
- What your measure of success will be; if it’s money, how much money? Enough to quit your day job? Everyone wants to make more money, but if you set definitive goals (bring in 35% more revenue) it will be easier to come up with a plan to achieve it.
- You also need to think about some more intuitive and emotional goals – how do you want your business to be perceived? What do you want people to think when your company is mentioned?
- Once you know the direction you want to go in, you have to stop thinking about what you want or what you sell.
- You need to instead start to focus on who buys your product or service (and who you want to be buying your service or product.
- Then, you need to start thinking about their influences and motivations, about their buying process and the needs and problems they have that drive them to seek out your product.

I never did write down any goals when I first started on the internet.
I came to the relization that goals are needed in order to acomplish along the way. I found now that having a goals list evrn a daily one you accomplish way more and thing you don’t do one day you can finish the next day.
Setting short and long term goals are essentials not only in a business but also in personal life. What you plan will fairly determine where are going to be in a specific period of time. However, one should think about the feasibility of a certain goal. Consider real time metrics and don’t go beyond reality. That might create frustration if not achieve. Keeping you on track and moving forward are purposes of goals.
Indeed these are one of the things a person should pay attention first to lead him/her in specific direction in a certain time.
I am regret that I have blogged with no goal so My work is not good.
Thank you for your vital post!
Cheer,
I’ve never set a goal at first since you have to setup the environment first. But the importance of setting goals can be seen in the long run. Starters usually gets impatient and they want to rush things up. Pros tend to be more relaxed and realistic. Starters need to set a goal since they messed up their pathway, the only problem with this is when you given up already because improvements are slow.
I am trying to sell a membership to something according to your instructions.
I am just starting out, literally only a few days old, so I will be reading your blog in depth for masterful tips and ideas. My blog is not a Make Money Online expert blog, but I do want to make money online with it. My blog is more of a journal of my success and failures and the reader can pick or chose what items may or may not work for them.
My goals is to make a successful run at Affiliate Marketing and to move away from the 9-5 day in and day out job to living the lifestyle of the more relaxed.
Hi This post is sooo right. Without a goal and knowing where you are heading you are without focus and without focus you will just butterfly about from one thing to another and get nowhere. Plan, organise, focus.

As business owners, we have 3 people inside of us:
1. entrepreneur
2. manager
3. technician
Goal setting and dreaming is the job of the entrepreneur. Let him go to work the best he can. Dream big-set big goals!

hi, this is the common problem, how can we set our self to the optimization. so this will be helpful to findout real goals for every blogger.
Setting goals is fine, sticking to them is the hard part. You never really know what direction you will take for the day until you read emails. I’m speaking for myself now. It takes real practice to avoid looking at some of the websites linked to my emails. And then the hard part comes because next I look at my rss feeds which could take another, well, all day if I let it. So I guess you’re right if you don’t have a goal, you’ll just wonder around and by the time you realize what your doing the day is wasted.
thanks for the useful pointers. I am just starting a new network of sites with my team, I think in our next meeting we will set the 1,3 and 5 year goals. Thanks!
Excellent article. We as entrepreneurs sometimes get to excited about our new ventures and forget to cover the basics like what we are trying to accomplish and how we will accomplish it.
I learned late that goals are definitely necessary for success. However, its never too late to start setting goals. I use them daily and the more specific your goals are the more likely you will be able to prepare and plan the path to achieving them. John Keep up with the great content.
I agree setting goal are very important, this has worked well for me in the past!
