How Long Before Your Blog Will Start Making Money?

A lot of new bloggers seem to think that once you’ve setup your blogspot.com account and you’ve written your first article, you’re set. Slap a couple of ads on and you can start planning your early retirement. If only..
The only thing that will make your blog money is you. Setting up the blog and providing it with (good or interesting) content is only half the the work. You’re going to have to sell yourself the best way you can –with your words.

Now, when you say you want to make money off your blog, we’re assuming that you’re talking at least 4 figures per month. Enough to buy that new iMac at the end of the month. Enough to book a long weekend to a sunny holiday resort. Enough to put a dent in your credit card balance. Your blog will convert the amount of time you put into it into cold hard cash. Like everything else in life, the harder you work, the better the results will be in the end.

Now, a lot of you are undoubtedly hard workers. You’re sacrificing quality time away from your partner, your friends and your xbox just so you can keep those articles coming. But how many of you are patient enough to sit through your first couple of months where you won’t make more than a couple of cents per day by some lost soul who clicked on your adsense by accident? Not that many! Once a new blogger start to realize that it takes hard work to make a name for yourself, most of them will try their luck elsewhere in search for the mighty dollar.

We might be doing alright with this young blog ourselves –nearly $6000,00 in our first three months, but we’ve been lucky that a silly idea we had turned out to be hit. We’d most likely not be making these amounts of money if we’d have a different domain.

The big time bloggers that you see making loads of cash are the ones that were patient and clever enough to see that the money will come if you hang in there. What it really comes down to is mentality. You’ll need to have a long term vision. We’re not saying you need to set yourself any goals, but just keep going. Look at us — we didn’t have a plan when we started a couple of months ago and we still don’t have one. All our posts are acts of random outbursts of “creativity”. We’re impulsive bloggers but we keep plowing and we’re convinced that eventually our ship will come in.

hanginthere.jpg

So how long before your blog will start making money? Its all up to you. Don’t sit around, writing post after post –hoping somewhere along the way people will start throwing you money. Be proactive and get out there. Let the world know how great your blog is, how harrd you’re working to make it a success. People will notice you and you will need to grab your chance to sell those ad spots, reviews and text links.

Don’t just let it happen, make it happen.

It is funny that you said you might not have been so successful so quickly if you had a different domain. I wondered the same thing about your blog in my post here http://courtneyturtle.com/a-bunch-of-words-on-starting-this-blog-part-1-4.html I am trying to see if lightening can strike twice with my parody blog on another popular blogger!

Well, constant writing, socializing, finding backlinks continuously, writing, writing, emailing, optimizing, promoting, and so on and so forth will eventually pay off. For some, in 2-3 months, for others in 7-8 months.

It’s both luck and hard work.

That’s all good advice.

I’ve been working on a similar “experiment” to yours, except rather than having a silly domain and a funky wordpress theme, I started with a bog standard wordpress installation and a newly registered domain.

I think it’s going to be tough to do anything like as well as you guys… but the challenge is half the fun, right?

I was very naive in the beginning and thought it was going to be soooo easy  Boy was I wrong! If it hadn’t been for a good super awesome blogger ( Cman ), then I probably would have have given up. My first 3 months were spent learning. I’m glad I didn’t give up though because I have made some really good money and friends.

Very true, it takes a while and a lot of people don’t have the drive to stick with it.

I had pretty realistic expectations going into blogging in knowing that I wouldn’t make anything the first month or even in the first year for that matter. I would like to generate some income eventually but I’m just trying to focus on building traffic right now. I’ve not even tried to monetize it yet. I’m not real sure where to start to be honest with monetization. I’d like to make a little extra, but I don’t want to alienate readers either by having ads on the site.

Great post Cow, very inspirational..I think too many people fall into the trap of reading blogs like this or Chow or Problogger and thinking, “yeah if they did it I can start doing it immediately!”. It does take a bit of time to see some results but can be well worth the time and effortwe.

It always takes work to make money. Blogging is no different than a “real” business, but for some reason people think it’s going to be easier. If anything blogging is harder because you don’t have anything aside from virtual screen space and an opinion to offer prospective viewers and advertisers. At least in my real world business I can physically manifest my work for my customers.

It’s easy, but the best is not to do it for the money. Better be building sites for the money and have a blog for random posts.

In my opinion, it takes at least 6 months for the big money to start rolling in….Offcourse, to get as big as John Chow and Darren Rowse it can take upto 2 years…

You are really speaking from experience about making money with a blogger… At the initial stage of mine, I didn’t really make any money. I simply just blog and play with my own domain name. An idea came along to do video reviews… And I got to review you cows and slowly, it simply expands out. Though I am not using any innovative idea to take an unfair step, I am working closely to build my reputation and blog up in the Internet world. In fact, I found myself having to review other people’s websites and books in the form of sponsored posts. I think it’s all worth it to work just one step at a time to get yourself up and running to become a full time blogger in the end…

I believe that once you are able to work full time, starting another blog is just a breeze since you know what to do to bring in the buck…

Thank you cows for giving me the chance to review you… I love cows who have milk for me! hehe

Thanks for this inspiring post Cow guy.

I started blogging in April and thought I would be able to make money quickly, obviously I quickly learned I was wrong but I did discover that I quite enjoyed blogging and the idea of living an online life to pay the bills is still very much my goal!

However I still have not made much money (about $20) but things are finally, slowly, shaping up and I can see income increasing slightly from now on.

Especially with the wise words I receive from this and many other blogs.

This was a really good post. I first started out as one of those people who thinks making money from blogging is easy. Boy was I wrong. The first thing you need to do is spend a lot of time building traffic. In terms of blogging, this can take a few months to a year. My blog is a little over a month old and I have gotten an alexa rank of around 1.1million. I know that with more work and patience I can easily bring this even lower. Keep up the great posts man.
