Google For Advertisers Teaches a HUGE Lesson

…besides how to run an ad campaign.
Something cool and new to check out: Google for Advertisers http://www.google.com/advertisers/ launched Monday, April 27, 2009. It’s meant to be a place where all of Google’s advertising options and tools come together in one useful place.
It’s got a ton of info on all of Google’s media platforms, as well as all of the tools that go along with each one. Whether you use search, TV, the Content Network, or Mobile advertising, or any combination thereof, it’s got the info you need. Google for Advertisers takes all of these options and shows you how to apply them across all stages of your advertising campaign, something they call “The Marketing Cycle.”
They even give a thorough (if far-fetched) example that is both visually pleasing and informative. I like how clearly everything is laid out, with each stage of the campaign clearly defined; if they were to make it any clearer, they’d send someone over to your house to plan the campaign for you.
I also like the option of being able to build your own toolkit with the specific tools that you use the most. Google already had a lot going for it with all of the free tools and research options that it had available. A customized interface is really the cherry on top of the sundae.
I’ve heard some people asking why Google bothers with all of these ‘free’ tools; why give away something this valuable for free when they could charge for it. The answer is simple: because the happier we are with their programs/tools/interface (especially for free) and the easier it is to use, the more we will use it. And the more we use it, the more money Google makes. The cost to make these tools available to the public is a drop in the bucket compared to what Google makes on advertising revenues.
So, beyond using this brand new shiny tool to your best advantage, take a lesson from Google’s example!
How?
Figure out what you can give to your audience that’s of value to them, but will also encourage them to use your product/service, and help to raise your bottom line!

Great article Jason.
I do disagree about the free version though. If they charged money, they would get the more serious marketers involved rather than the inexperienced. The amount of money that they brought in from sales along with the amount of cash from a serious marketer brought compared to novice would outweigh it in my opinion.
Good article though.

Google rocks free keyword research. I don’t know why a person would bother paying for a high powered tool when you have so much power with Google. Google results are a very good indication of the entire search market. While there are other venues for keywords (yahoo, msn, wordtracker), Google is really all a person needs.
Cheers!
