FireFox 3 Download Day - a Cow Ponders

Well we know this has been talked about by others already, but it is Saturday and even though our post yesterday was not a “make money online” kind of thing, we are still a little burnt out over the long training posts of the COWpetition. Now do not worry and think things are going to slack off around here.. far from it… but we are taking a wee bit of a break. We need to let the grass in the pasture grow back before we head back over there again (should be back by Monday).

We actually wrote this post in bits and pieces over the past week and thought it would make a good Saturday read, so here goes…

June 17th has come and gone (in case you have not noticed… yes we are Captain Obvious). It was a highly anticipated day in browsing history (ohh that makes it sound so important… but only us internet geeks really cared about it ) because it was the release day of FireFox 3!

It seems lots of Firefox user’s are pretty stoked about the new release of Firefox 3 and the reasons being that Mozilla has been working for the past 34 months on making a new more secure, easier to use browser, which won’t use up as much memory as the older version. In fact, there are so many new feature’s with Firefox 3, Mozilla made a nice webpage for them.

So from what we understood and assumed, Firefox 3 would be ready for downloading as soon as we we’re ready to go on the 17th, well not so much.

We checked it out when we first got into the office, just for cow patties and giggles and we still had to ‘pledge’ that we would download it. See, Mozilla wants to make Guinness Book of Records for the most amount of software downloads in 24 hours.

So we left it for the rest of the morning, and then ended up going for lunch. Well we got back to the office and found out that Firefox 3 was suppose to be released by 1pm. Well we took a look at our clocks and it was 1:52pm so we thought we were in luck.

We headed on over to Mozilla’s webpage, only for it to be ‘down’. Then we found out that Mozilla’s server’s crashed before the official launch was to happen.

See, we personally don’t care about things like that. When something that’s highly anticipated by users all over the world, we know that these things are going to happen.

Now we are unsure if there is any sort of record that Mozilla has to compete with to make it into Guiness Book of Records, however from what we understand they have around 2 million people already pledging that they will download their newest browser. And those are just the people who pledged….so we will wait and see.

Update 1

As of 3:55pm on June 17th 2008, we officially downloaded FireFox 3. It’s apparently going to take around 12-15 minutes, but with the way their server’s have been acting, it’s not all surprising.

So now we are just patiently waiting for the download to finish so we can install the new browser and take it out for a test drive.

Update 2

So it’s now 4:13pm and we’ve finally installed FireFox 3 and it’s up and running. So far so good, we haven’t run into any type’s of problems or anything and the new changes look-wise of the browser are quiet nice.

Well actually the only thing we noticed that happened, was our Google Reader wasn’t compatible with the new version of Firefox, so we surfed on over to Mozilla.com and searched for it again, sure enough there it was on the front page and available for our version of Firefox. We installed it quickly and it’s working like a charm.

Our bookmark’s are still all there, hmmm, we seem to remember problems with bookmark’s not copying over into a new browser almost two years ago *Cough* IE7 *Cough*

We’re playing around with the new browser now and noticing some differences, especially in the history when you pull up your drop down menu. Not only does it have the link like it use too, but each website has it’s own little section and to be honest, we’re not quiet sure how we feel about it.

However one cool thing we did notice is that if you look in the upper right hand corner of the picture above, you’ll notice a star that’s actally in White, next to the RSS Feeder. Well if you look on the bottom right hand corner of the photo that’s above, you’ll notice the same star, but it’s gold.

If you are ever on a website that you want to quickly add to your favorite’s, just simply click on the WHITE star in the upper right hand corner and it will add it to your “Recently Bookmarked” Folder.

It’s all about making things simple and easy. Well so far from what we can see we are totally enjoying the new Firefox 3.

Update 3

Looks like over 8 000 000 downloads of Firefox 3 in 24 hours (Click Here to read the story)… Congrats Mozilla!

We’ll keep our eye’s on it for the next few day’s and see what else we can come across.

Until then, who of you are part of that 8 000 000 and care to share your thoughts on it at all?

If you have not downloaded the latest FireFox, get it at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

For some reason in FF3 from beta 5 to RC1 to final, page caching has been errored on mine, to view some pages like google analytics properly I have to clear the cache. I will try uninstalling firefox completely and reinstalling eventually.

I downloaded and tried out FF3.

Too many crashes and some images were not loading on vBulletin forums. Downgraded back to 2.0.0.14 and everything worked OK. But that is something that I expected as nothing is ever perfect when it first comes out.

Will wait about a week or so to see if any of the kinks get worked out.

I’m a fan of Firefox but Firefox 3 keeps crashing on my Vista powered computer. It’s the first problem I’ve had with Vista.

I like Firefox3 very much but i have some problems with the addons. For example the del.icio.us firefox extension. When i install it it says that it`s not compatible with firefox3. I hope they will fix that! Anyway, great browser!

Not being a computer whiz, I simply forgot about this updated release. I can not, however, wait until I download it at home. We have been using the older version with no problems.

I tried it a while back and didn’t like the beta. So i’m not that fussed that every time i try to upgrade it fails. Prolly something to do with ubuntuzilla, but i am happy with ff2 and all the plugins working, anyway
