Finding the Music That Produces the Best Work

I’m a music guy at heart. If you’ve ever met me, you’ll know that I am always playing some music (probably a bit o’ Clapton) or I am jamming with my electric guitar. Regardless, chances are, you know that I love music; always have and always will. But, did you know that music can actually bring about higher quality work? Based on the style of music that you pick and based on your personality, you can actually produce better work.
I am going to talk about what really seems to work for me because I cannot exactly analyze anyone, but what you can take from it is the principle behind the use of music to promote better work habits. And if you happen to be similar to me then by all means, buy the songs, build a play list, and get to work on creating better content. Whatever works for you is what works for you; this is just an example of something that really works for me.
When I am trying to really conjure up some ideas for things, I tend to put on something a bit faster and a bit harder. I have gone so far as to crank up the AC/DC simply because I want to give my head an overload and really get it working. I’ll stand up, I’ll play air-guitar (yes, even real guitarists do that) and I’ll just pretend to jam. But, what I have found, for me at least, is that when I am getting the blood pumping and really getting into my little rock session, my brain bounces around with ideas. The trick is, though, to grab onto one of those ideas and work with it.
Once I have come up with an idea, I’ll change to something a bit more mellow. For instance, I am a die hard fan of Eric Clapton. He is my idle and I wish I could play as good as him. One day…Anyways. When I have an idea, I turn on some Layla, Wonderful Tonight, Sunshine of my Love, or something that is Clapton oriented and begin to expand on the idea. By having this slightly more mellow music, you are giving your brain that stimulation to keep working, but now you can really focus on getting the ideas to paper and to add sub-ideas. Even with a blog post, there are points to be made. I had an idea for this post, but I had to sit down and actually plot it out to have success.
And finally, when I do get to work on writing the actual blog post, I turn to something incredibly softer. Clapton’s Tears in Heaven works wonders or I will jump right over to something classical. For instance, Luciano Pavarotti does wonders for my brain when I am trying to cram out a blog post. By the time I am writing the post, I want to give my brain time to really get its thoughts together without bouncing around, but still provide music to really keep it stimulated. A stimulated brain is a successful brain and that is where you will find success.
They say that Mothers who allow their developing baby to listen to music from Mozart will naturally become smarter. Music is a phenomenal tool that I believe really allows you to grow into a much rounder individual. And, in my opinion, the use of music allows you to really get those thoughts out on paper. This idea for a blog post came from music. I was jamming along to some real good music and suddenly, the idea popped into my head: Duh, Jacob! Write about music! Voila, here’s the post. Find your style of music that allows you to really get your work done and you’ll find that you really have the greatest success.

I concur completely with the point about different music working for different people. Music is associated or tied into many things. The trick is finding that song or artist who you relate to a certain state of mind (ex. Working, relaxing, thinking) and create a suitable work enviornment.
Please note: “He is my idle” —– correction: “He is my idol” (hate to nitpick, but if Jon wants to fix this he can)

This could work, this evening its Thunderstruck and Back in Black!
I find that constantly changing the environment you work in, ie music for a bit, then silence, then some more music, helps you focus better. It stops you from day dreaming as much and keeps you working.

Yeah, I don’t think my wife understands how I can listen to music and still concentrate on stuff.
Especially because I’m a huge Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, Gary Hoey, Ratt, and Racer X fan.
But hey, it works…

Interesting that when I used to do graphics for a living computer art at home I could listen to music all the time, but now that I blog a lot, I have a hard time listening to music.
