Are you making a living doing what you truly love to do?Kris Kros

If not, then make a plan to start living your dream job!

If you don’t know what you want to do, just think about something that you’re passionate about – a hobby, a pastime, a favorite sport. If you could do one thing every day for the rest of your life, what would that thing be? What would make you happy to get out of bed every morning and get paid doing it?

My suggestion – take a few minutes and create a list of things that you enjoy doing. Then, think of some ways you can get paid for it.

For instance, I love beach houses! Everything about them makes me melt – their picturesque settings, the style of architecture used, the owner’s choice of landscaping. When I see beach houses, something about them just makes my soul happy. Plenty of times, I’ve driven down the famous A1A highway here in Florida looking in awe at the variety of beach homes and wondered… “What do the owners do for a living?” and “How did they get the money to be able to afford to live there?”

I’d love to write a book about or, even better, create a website about beach houses. I’d buy up a few catchy domain names for my website, like stunningbeachhomes.com. Then, I’d interview as many beach house owners as possible and learn their stories. Recently, I had the privilege to meet an owner of a Florida beach house and learn his story. He ended up purchasing his oceanfront home in the mid-1970’s. Price tag: $30K - it’s probably worth $500k right now!

I’d love to put this interview, along with all the other interviews I conduct, on my catchy website. I’d upload appealing pictures (to catch and retain my website’s visitors’ attention) and I would include unique details about each story (to create a content-rich website for search engines). I’d promote my site by getting involved in different online forums and blogs that are related to beaches and beachfront property.

And to help monetize the site - I’d post highly targeted ads, like beach vacation offers, books to read while on the beach, and resorts and spas that are geo-targeted based on the location of my site’s viewers. I’d even have links and advertisements on my site to things like camera equipment and rental cars…the list goes on. Once built, I’d create a few dozen micro sites with the beach being my main topic and then monetize it.

Sit down and write out your ideas. Go someplace quiet that inspires you – it could be a local park, your front porch, or in my case, the beach - any other place where you can focus and think without any interruption.

The key is NOT to leave any idea in your head! Write out every idea that you think of. Then, write down some ways you could design a website around those ideas. The more passion you have for your idea, the more inspired you will be to write quality information.

And if you haven’t guessed it by now, my second favorite passion is writing online! Having been involved in blogging for several years, I was blessed and fortunate to be “discovered”
and offered a great paying, full-time position as a blogger with Market Leverage, a CPA affiliate network.

Perhaps sometime soon, I will be fortunate enough to have someone interview me about my beachfront property. :)

This prompts me to think. I guess most started a niche sites by targeting a profitable or a mini niche without asking a question like this.

Definitely, there are a lot of affiliate programs for us to promote out there that are compatible with our interests and hobbies.

Nice inspirational post here.

Yeah, too many people get wrapped into simply developing sites that are profitable and not something they have interest in. It is typically a terrible mistake too.

I actually found this post really useful! I’ve been thinking about exploiting my niche of indie bands. I currently run 1 fan website that became the largest for that band, and now I’m thinking about creating a network of similar bands! I think one important point that you missed out was keyword research. If a niche is saturated in the search engines there’s not a lot of point pursuing it.

I agree. Sharing your passion doesn’t feel like work at all. I love beach houses, too!

“If a niche is saturated in the search engines there’s not a lot of point pursuing it.”

Why? as long as you love it and passionate about something people will find you, plus odds are your content will be much better than the other content.

@debbie, great post.

Doing a topic you love also helps you stay motivated as opposed to writing about air purifiers or mold cause some keyword tool told you to lol ;)

Great article, I enjoyed it. Also, with saturation in niche areas… it’s not always necessarily a bad thing. If it’s saturated, that means there is plenty of money to be made. If the niche is also your passion, then it may drive your passion even more to see your blog/site grow and continually grow past the competition!

It’s true…choosing a niche is very important..you should make sure that you are very familiar with your topics so you won’t run out of ideas..because it’s very important to constantly update your blogs and you can only update it regularly if you have lots of topics and ideas in your mind that you want to post.

Just 5 minutes before reading this article, I was thinking about opening a web site about trucks, my passion. Your article was the push I needed. Thanks.

Nice post. Set me thinking. Often, one gets carried away by cheer peer pressure. At the end of the day, he gets down-casted because he has spent so much energy pursuing a goal he is not really interested in.

I sure will follow my passion. That the niche one is interested in is already saturated doesn’t mean anything. If you really have passion for it, it is a matter of time before you stand out amidst the crowd.

Thanks for sharing. I want to have a beach house too.

recently i change my website’s topic into something i really passionate about. it cost me a lot, i have to remove all the past articles, i have to tweak the theme from scratch again. a lot work to do from the start again. but i guess it would be better than doing something that i don’t like (though it give me money :p )

anyway, great article… and, new theme huh? i like this better than the last one

I couldn’t agree more. I was actually thinking about posting this several times over the last few weeks and you beat me to it. Didn’t your grandma always say “stick with what you know…?”

It is wonderful once you can do things you love and get paid for doing that…It might be hard at the beginning, especially because we want to see immediate results.

You will see tons of fake success stories that will try to impress you can make money easily. But you have to follow your own path. The key is in persistence.

Once you set a goal it is just a matter of time…you will reach it! If not today, tomorrow.

I believe that even if you don’t know your real passion yet, starting a blog on any topic is a BIG step toward your success. Once you get comfortable in all this blogging thing, it’s just a matter of minutes setting a new blog with a topic you really love. So if you don’t know your true passion, blog about your pets, your friends whatever, and when you find that ONE you will be ready for it.
