CommentMILK (beta) – the NEW JohnCow Plugin
| Share |
You may have noticed that I stopped using CommentLuv recently and that there is a new icon under my comments. CommentLuv is a fantastic plugin and personally I have no issues with it (well other then a few small things) but overall it was great.
What I was in the need for however was something that not only posted a backlink but I also wanted the ability for my readers to be able to get some keyword love as well. Yes there is the plugin “KeywordLuv” but it too was limited in what I needed.
So what was it missing?
>> Contest Management <<
As you know, JohnCow.com is home to a lot of contests and love to hold them. The challenge is it can at times be a little tricky and cumbersome tracking entries and if you like to allow your participants to enter for multiple entries (extra tickets) then it gets even more complicated.
As you may or may not know, we also recently started a case study about promoting the site “An Aud Life” with a contest. This was the inspiration for actually finishing the plugin. Sadly it has taken longer to get this finished then originally planned but that is what happens when your reliable programmers are busy on your other projects and you need to outsource to some one new (arghhhh!!!).
Anyhoooo…. we are in the finishing stages and there are just a few little kinks to be worked out. The plugin is 99% ready and I plan on releasing it to all of you in the next 48 hours (maybe even sooner).
So Announcing…

Below in the comments area you will see a working example of it.
I will have a full fledge training document and video once it is released but for now you can play with it and get some free link love. Fill out the criteria and see how it registers your points (if this was a contest). There is a lot more to it but I wanted to test out a working example first, so I can put the training together
Let me know your thoughts.

Es ist vielleicht für den Blogger selbst interessant, wer seinen Feed liest, wer seinen Newsletter abonniert hat usw. Aber ob das

This is what it looks like when you fill it out
I don’t get it? More boxes to fill in?
A little busy looking. Would suggest to put the comments above the links etc.
Wow.this is cool.this is much better than commentluv i gues.so much info on the commenter
i really like it
Ronald
very nice plugin. in better than commentluv i guess.so much info on the commenter.
I like it!!

This is better than commentluv I think. But what is feedbite?
The latest blog post works good. But I didn’t understand the other feature.
What’s the purpose of that points?
You gone ahead and did it
It’s very cool. The purpose of the points is to track your bonus points, e.g. 5 points if you twitter about this contest, etc etc.
Now I know..
I think this plugin need some more update
Amazing little plug in.. Working it. Had problems not getting any of the feeds to save. Kept getting errors. Should be a good tool.
Cheers
Cool plugin let’s see how it works.
I get it now very cool. This would be great for running a contest and having people accumulate points and getting some links etc. Really clever.
aha, now I understand how this works – neat!
Could do with losing the long list of smilies above the comment box though
I quite like the keyword for the hyper link. But the rest of it is a bit confusing and makes the comment section look cluttered!
Ohh and the link it provides is do follow as well. Very nice
There is actually an option to select nofollow or not.
Really good plugin, but would it ever be a problem when you have a lot of comments? It seems like the comments will pull down a bit too much. Maybe a possible AJAX feature to have it minimize/maximize in the future.

This is a cool plugin.
Trying that again…
Interesting post. I might want to add something like this to my blog.
J.R.
Nice. Agree with showing comments first.
Commenting on blog posts is a good way to drive traffic and generate social proof. However, this plug-in may be a tad complicated for regular commenters who have no clue about SEO.
You would only use the extra fields if you are holding a contest and you can assign which post would have the extra fields.
not sure on this plugin seems more to fill out i look forward to seeing your instructions and reasons for the extra fields
Wow, very impressive! CommentMILK sounds like an awesome blog plugin. You’ve created the plugin that does it all! I can’t wait to see it in action! Congrats!
What if I didn’t subscribed to the newsletter and I check subscribed to newsletter? That will give me more points even if I don’t deserve them?
So much to type in, I forgot what I actually wanted to comment about. DOes that make sense?
Great idea, but looks a bit strange at the moment, adds to much bluff to the comments.
Presume it has an admin interface where these extra details can be viewed rather than viewing them on the comments?
Just wanted to test out the thingy. CommentMilk sounds like CommentLuv. Lots of things added to the comments box. Will there be a way for the plugin to only be active on one post/page?
just a suggestion if Blog Post URL & twitter are linked i would be much better too:)
Not sure what I think yet but seems pretty cool.
[...] Your page is on StumbleUpon [...]
oh noes!! commentluv gone and I had just got the heart box sorted for all blogs too!
before I was on commentluv I was considering making a contest supporting commentform but it only allocated a random number to each unique comment author to put into a virtual hat come competition time.
I like the idea of an extended commentform and I think it works well on a make money blog because most visitors are familiar with things like twitter, keyword hyperlinks and such but no so sure on a regular journal type blog.
maybe even less on a blog who doesn’t get as much traffic or isn’t as famous and thus reluctant to give out links so freely.
I think I could work in some extra features to commentluv to accomplish this too, simple to add an options page for registered members to add non-feed links to their list of last posts so a twitter link or keyword will follow the list of their last 10 posts….
not sure though, have to thunk about it
I felt I should say that as a contest assist plugin it is great! can it be switched on or off per post?
I think this plug-in will just confuse new visitors to your blog. If they never read this blog post and they will not even understand all the different boxes they have to fill in. I think the idea is a really good one however you can scare away a lot of new visitors that could be potential subscribers and readers.
I think you are misunderstanding the plugin. It would only have the extra fields on the contest post. The contest post would then have instructions.
If people are not reading the post they should not be commenting anyway.
haha, that is true and something I find again and again on my plugin pages. People will read down to the download link and no further! the amount of people I get asking questions on the installation instructions page that are answered between the download link and the comment form is getting silly.
For your plugin, I think maybe having the contest post use a javascript slide down div with the extra fields in it would be more user friendly and prevent people that don’t read the full post from entering a contest they didn’t know about.
You wouldn’t need to alter the comment form and could use javascript to insert the additional fields’ data into hidden fields on the comment form and then process them at the pre_process_comment hook, hmmm, sounds like a personal project beginning to form…
good luck with your plugin.
No need to make duplicate plugins with just some minor differences, the internet tubes are clogged up as it is already.
Interesting concept – I am part of a book blogging community and we’re always doing contests, this would definitely help.
Interesting plugin. I like that it gathers more info than other comment plugins.
I would like to see the Twitter and Feedbite urls hyperlinked. I think these links could be nofollow since you’re already giving dofollow to keywords.
Will the plugin user be able to modify/add fields? For example, if I didn’t want Twitter, but wanted StumbleUpon instead, could I change it?
Mike
Interesting plug-in. There are a lot of options to fill in but I guess you are free to ignore them as some posters have.
It will be interesting to get my hands on this and see what it can do.
Dungeon Legacy
Good idea. I’ve been told that many of these plugins have hidden links to the author’s site each time it is used. Is this true? What about your plugin?
John, seems interesting and has potential. Of course useful for managing contests… makes things a heck of alot less messy.
This is an awesome plugin. I’m liking the fact that you are branding so many helpful tools with the john cow name. Keep them coming, you run an excellent business.
it’s not that hard to understand how it works
I can see why you would want this for contests. Also, the fact that you can enter your own keywords is cool.
So I’m guessing the blog post URL is the one that would show where a mention of the contest was or is the one you want mentioned such as the most recent post that CommentLuv would pull.
I still think CommentLuv is great because of its simplicity.
This is a whole new level of commenting man. Awesome plugins, I like the hyperlinked keywords thing.
Hrmm…seems like a lot a boxes to fill in.
Nice work…this should come in handy.
yummy… yummy,,, make people health drinking milk. let blogger health using comment milk.
Hmmmm,
random….a little confusing and annoying….we will see
Nice work, Cow!
Nice plugin, cant wait to put it in use!
I’m missing this checkbox “Maybe I like this plugin, I have to test run it first”
Can’t get the real deal about this plugin yet I love for the free link love
It looks interesting, let’s wait and see how it works with instructions.
I think also that could be good to have the chance to change some of the questions, like Twitter and Feedbite.
Looks like a great new plugin, but aren’t you concerned Google will penalize your site John? I mean commentluv is one thing but actually allowing comentators to receive anchor links seems like you’re entering a pretty “gray” area.
Well unless I am behind on my knowledge… since when has Google been penalizing people for that?
Slick idea…I thought of the same thing awhile back…well sort of a combo between this and the social plugin…where commentators would fill in their social profile usernames and then an icon will display with a link…problem was, I wanted a way for it to add it to the cookie so it didn’t have to be re-typed all the time…
Creating an account is something I never though of, plus I didn’t have a reliable programmer…or enough of a desire to follow thru with it
Ok, just tried to post twice and got a big long error message. Will try this once more, not sure if its working…
=========================
People have always used anchor text they want in the “Name” field for links from blog comments anyways.
Nice plugin Cow. I like.

Hi JC,
This is really interesting! I’m really curious to see how this plug in would be different than the CommentLuv plugin. I really hope that this plugin will work with my blog ‘coz for some reason CommentLuv does not, no matter how many times I’ve tried to tweak it around
Thanks for all your hard work!
Thanks for the plugin. Going to test it out in my new blog
This is a great plugin, thanks!
I am installing the CommentMilk! This is another great feature for my website.
I really like the idea of this new plugin. Although I tried posting a comment several days ago, and got a big script error message screen, im going to give it another shot.
Ok, here goes…
-Shaun
Found your plugin in my wordpress admin. Checking it out
Wow this plugin is cool. I plan to integrate it to my blog.
Great Idea! Perhaps it will eliminate the need for people to use keywords instead of their name in their comments.
I’m going to bookmark this site and revisit. Looks like you have some good information here.
very nice plugin. in better than commentluv i guess.so much info on the commenter.
I like it!!
