Gee, what do you think this post is going to be about?

Your content is what is going to truly make you a Trusted Expert – it is the single most important thing you can do.

If you’ve been following all the advice I’ve already given in the Trusted Expert series, you’ve already come up with something of value to provide your users with – that thing that helps cement you as a Trusted Expert in their minds, whether it be a tool, ebook, audio or video file or report, and that’s great, but you can’t stop there.

As I mentioned in the last trusted Expert post about site maintenance, it’s important to your reputation as a Trusted Expert that you continually update your site. Make sure that you add in new testimonials when you get them – you can keep the best ones from the past up, but also make sure that there are also new ones, so that people will know that you’re still doing a great job of helping your customers now, not just 3 or 4 years ago.

Also, be sure you keep up on what’s happening in your niche, and where applicable, comment on it. It will add to your Trusted Expert status if you can prove to your audience that you not only participate in the niche, but you’re also up on what’s the latest happening. Put your ideas and opinions out there enough, and soon people will start to look to you for their news and information about your topic – the very definition of a Trusted Expert. And if they go to you for information, where are they going to go when they need to buy something – that’s right – to you.

Always respond to customer inquiries, and if you think the information is useful enough, get the original person’s permission and add it to your site. Not only are you sharing valuable information with your audience, you’re also showing them that you care enough to respond to the people who contact you, making other people more likely to contact you (and possibly buy from you) in the future.

Most importantly, don’t rest on your laurels. You may have written the best ebook or come up with the best tool in the world to brand yourself as a Trusted Expert. And you may think that’s enough. The problem is, no matter how good the original was, everything on the internet has an expiry date on it. Eventually, you’ll need to either update what you have or come up with something new entirely. By being proactive about this, you’ll just further reinforce the idea that you’re an expert in your niche.

Your content is the way you communicate with your users. Everything you say, and how and when you say it contribute to the overall effect of you being seen as an expert. The cornerstone of being a Trusted Expert is to provide users with useful information – not to make a sale. The sale is the side affect of them trusting you because of your useful content. So make sure that you put at least as much effort, if not more, into the quality of your content as you do with your marketing tactics and you’ll be fine.

Another important part of being a Trusted Expert is doing proper site maintenance. And I’m not talking about just doing testing, either – it goes further than that. Bottom line, you won’t be seen as a Trusted Expert unless your site is properly maintained. So here’s what you need to do:

1. Consistently check for broken links on your site. You won’t be seen as any kind of expert, much less a trusted one, if you’re asking people to click on links that then go nowhere. Pointing people to useful information can only help them see you as a Trusted Expert – just make sure that you regularly check those links to make sure they are still valid as well as adding new ones when you find them.

2. Make sure to keep all pertinent info updated. To give you an example, I was recently contemplating a purchase from an online retailer. They weren’t a large, well known brand name, but they looked like they were trustworthy and secure, and since they had the best prices for what I was looking for, I was willing to give them a try. So I clicked on the ‘About Us’ section, which gave me info about their history (good), where they were physically located (also good) as well as some testimonials (should have been good but….) The problem with the testimonials? The most recent one was from 2007. And just like that, I lost faith in the retailer, and decided not to purchase from them, because either they hadn’t had a good review since 2007 and so had nothing to put up, or they were too lazy to proper site maintenance and update their ‘About Us’ section more than once every 5 years or so.

3. Conduct some low-level usability tests. I’m not saying that you need to go through the whole exercise of conducting full-blown usability tests (unless you’re a fairly big retailer, and then you absolutely should invest the money in it.) But what you can do (for free) is recruit some friends or colleagues to do a few simple tests. Think about something that the average visitor to your site would want to do – either get information on a specific thing, or make a purchase. Then go through the steps needed to do that – how is the process? If you can get friends to do it who haven’t been to the site or performed that action before, you can get some very valuable feedback about how your user views your site, an d how you can improve their experience.

4. Ask your customers for feedback on their experience. And actually listen. A big part of being a Trusted Expert is building a relationship with your users, and becoming their go-to guy for whatever your niche is. So once you manage to get them there, listen to what they want. Maybe they liked most of it, but they’d prefer if you had user reviews for your product, or they’d like to see what shipping costs would be before they get to checkout. Remember, the site is for them, not for you.

5. Keep the site updated, but don’t change everything all the time. It can be tempting, in the name of staying current, to always update the site with the latest images and graphics. But if you change things too much, people won’t recognize it. If you invest the time in the design of the site at the beginning, then you won’t have as much trouble with it. Strive to maintain a balance between keeping things fresh and keeping things familiar. You want people to feel comfortable and trust you, but you also want to be seen as current. I know that was kind of vague, but it’s something I can’t give you strict guidelines for – just be aware of it.

A Trusted Expert is someone who is one the ball, and is always their for their users as a resource. By performing proper site maintenance, you’ll ensure that the people you’ve managed to bring to your site will continue to see you that way, ensuring a lasting relationship that’s beneficial to you both.

A couple weeks ago I sent my readers an email about a webinar that was being held called “the Outsider Code“. Well due to some unforeseen circumstances the webinar was canceled and is to be rescheduled.

What the webinar was going to be about is this brand new service for making passive income called the Outsiders Code and it was falling on the last day of a conference that was being held in Vancouver… a conference I was at.

Now the conference was… well I will not lie and say it was great… BUT… the service looks incredible.

So the title of this post looks as though I may be slamming this conference for the way the conference was handled… but that is actually not the case. Yes it was not exactly what I had envisioned but however it did make one major claim “Life Changing” and that is actually something that I think it potentially is going to be with me.

The service was initially only opened to a small group of people and they are not ready to open to more (rumor is in a couple weeks) but they really want me to look at it, so I was able to get my own access (not a demo account either).

What I am absolutely impressed with thus far is the process they start the newbie out with and this is what is going to lead into my title of this post.

I can not really reveal as of yet what this system does but it is totally designed to help anyone who can invest a little bit (at least $1000) to be able to generate a very healthy passive income… and it is not by doing the standard things… it actually only takes about 30 minutes a week. Well that is actually not true, it takes about 5 hours to get set up and go through all the training and action steps but once you are set up all you will have to do is once a week follow the advice of the system, tweak a few things and that is it.

Yes I know, the first thing you are probably thinking is… WHATEVER!!!

Well I can tell you this. I am personally going through the system and when it is ready to launch I will 100% be ready to tell you exactly my opinion and whether it does what it says… but if you are interested in learning more about it, they are having a webinar soon that you will want to sign up for… I do highly recommend you check that out at least for now… and do not worry there is nothing to buy and you will learn something . You can CLICK HERE to learn more.

So with that being said now let me talk about getting your crap together.

With this membership, the first step of the process is to make sure you have your crap together and they really make it so you have to ponder on a few things before you move forward. One of the steps is very similar to what Frank Kern taught about writing out what you want in life… but this system makes you fill in the blanks and actually is really easy and I can tell you now it has made me rethink a lot and all I can say is… WOW.

The WOW part is mainly that I did not have a freaking clue as to what I really wanted… and now that I do, I see how it is changing my view point on things BIG TIME.

I am not really going to be able to do this system justice but there is one thing I want you to do right now… and I promise it will actually be fun and help you… answer the following questions (no these are not directly from the outsider code)

How much money would you realistically love to have in extra passive income. exactly one year from now? I am not talking about winning the lottery but I mean realistically… would it be $2000/month, $4000 or more? Figure that out and indicate a number that would make you feel happy right now to be earning in one year.

How would you spend that money? Calculate how much money your monthly goal would equal in one year (for example $2000 is $24 000 for a year) and then divide up out of that what you would do with that money… save for a house, car, retirement, bills, vacation, charity… list all the things that you would spend it on? Remember this is not money for living day to day… this is passive income above your current living.

Create a word doc that has pictures of those goals and post it near your work station.

Now calculate what that equals in earnings per day. So take the yearly and divide it by 365, so $24000 would equal only $65 a day.

That’s now your new goal… you need to start earning $65 a day to reach your goal and so now create the tasks to get you there. So for example, if you build affiliate sites and are currently earning $25 a day, what can you do to get that to $65.

OK, this is not really a detailed plan but I promise if you have never done anything like that before… just those simple steps are a huge stepping stone.

I would love you comments on this… so tell me… did you try the exercise?

As promised, I’m getting on with the Trusted Expert series and finishing up with the last few posts before everything moves over to the new site. When we left off, we were talking about testing, and the next post is about multivariate testing.

And I’ve been dreading it – not because multivariate testing isn’t worth doing, it so is, but there’s a reason why I’ve been stuck at this particular point for some time. You see, multivariate testing can be a valuable tool that can tell you some very important things about what is working on your site and what isn’t. No, multivariate testing can be an extremely useful thing -when it’s done right.

But if it’s done wrong, it can be a colossal waste of time that can also lose you money. And unfortunately, it’s easy to get multivariate testing wrong. And since I’m writing this post on multivariate testing, if I give you the wrong advice or don’t explain myself clearly, it’ll be my fault. No pressure.

So this post on multivariate testing will strive to be as clear and concise as possible. While firmly stand behind the importance of testing, I in no way claim to be any kind of testing guru or expert – my aim here is to give you a good grasp of the basics so that you’ll walk away with a good understanding of how things work, how it relates back to being a Trusted Expert. And if you want to go ahead and delve further into the more technical aspects of multivariate testing once we’re done, you’ll have a good knowledge base with which to do so.

So without further ado (that had to be the longest intro to a post, ever) let’s get into the nuts and bolts of multivariate testing. If you remember from way back in my post about A/B testing, in that case you can only compare one thing at a time – it’s built right into the parameters of the test. With multivariate testing, there is no such restrictions, so it’s up to you to make sure the things you choose to test don’t actually automatically negate any results you get.

As the name suggests, with multivariate tests, you’re dealing with more than one variable, and you can have any number of variations on each of those variables (more on whether that’s a good idea in a moment). Remember, with an A/B test, you could have any number of variations, but they all had to be about the same element (headers, checkout button, images, etc.) When you’re running a multivariate test, one would assume that the variables you choose to test together have some sort of relation to each other that will result in an overall improvement in performance, but that’s up to you to make the right choices (see why multivariate testing is so easy to screw up?).

Multivariate tests allow you to test the power of different combinations on your site, which can be a very powerful thing. We all know that all the elements on your site work together to influence the user, but with multivariate testing, you can figure out what combination of items will give you the best result.

And with multivariate tests, you get multiple possible combinations. For example, if you’ve got two areas you’re going to test, (say headlines and button color) and you’ve got 3 variations for each – that means that there are 9 possible combinations (3×3=9) that need to be tested. The more areas and variations, and the combinations will grow exponentially.

If you want to get your feet wet in multivariate testing, a good test to start with is a headline/main image combo, since they are viewed together and definitely have in impact on each other. Stick to no more than 3 variations for each – this will result in a test that will not take too long and give you results that are easy to interpret.

Since multivariate testing allows you so much more freedom than A/B testing, it can be easy to run into problems. Here are some common mistakes that people make:

testing too many things at once. When you start out with multivariate testing, it can be tempting to test a whole whack of things at once – Google Optimizer allows you to choose up to 1,000 possible combinations. The problem with this is trying to many things at once can muddy the waters. If your chosen combination has 5 different elements, it could be that, even amongst your highest performing combination, there are still things that aren’t working for your site. But since you had so many elements, it can be hard to pinpoint which one was the problem.

choosing too many variables. Similar to choosing too many elements, choosing too many variables will give you a lot of combinations – and that will make the test take longer. Some tests, because of the sheer number of combinations, can take YEARS to finish. Do you have that kind of time? Didn’t think so. Keep it simple, and see test results you can actually apply to your site in time for it to actually make a difference.

losing sight of your goals. Remember, going into any kind of test, you want to have some kind of hypothesis – the outcome that you expect. You need to keep that in mind when preparing any multivariate test so you don’t get mired down in the sheer amount of details. So for your headline/main image test, your hypothesis could be that an action-oriented headline along with a dynamic picture will be the combination that works best. You then use the multivariate test to either prove of disprove your hypothesis. And, as always, you apply that learning towards your next test and hypothesis.

Hope that helps you understand multivariate testing a bit. As I mentioned at the beginning, it can be a very useful tool to finding out what will perform the best on your site. But because of the sheer amount of freedom multivariate testing gives you, you need to make sure that you practice some kind of restraint to ensure that you’re getting the best possible results.

Do you know why the FTC put tougher rules in place for Internet marketers?

It’s because there is so much bull crap out there and deception that something had to be done.

Whether it is fake blogs that adjust their message based on your IP address or fake testimonials… people are sick of being deceived. It has gotten to the point that no one is wanting to believe anything anymore and I dont blame anyone for feeling that way.

The fact is, if you want to know the truth… if you want to see through the bullshit, then the only option is to go directly to the source and find out for yourself.

By doing this, the product owner only has two options…

Answer the questions truthfully

Lie and let the FTC deal with them.

The reason I want to mention that is because as you know or soon will know, Amish Shah is coming out with a brand new product called “The Magic Bullet System” (No this is nothing to do with the blender) and from what I can tell so far, Amish is going to be giving public access to the exact custom tools and system he uses to earn over $14000 a day in revenue.

There is going to be a price tag with this of course but you must admit it almost sounds too good to be true.

Now before I continue, I want to make it very clear that I do not know Amish Shah… I know of him and have heard many times his name mentioned from guys like Gauher Chaudrey (someone I respect very much) and because of that I wanted to see what he was all about. I was very impressed with the free video he put out last week and if you have not seen it…

STOP RIGHT NOW and CLICK HERE and check the video out.

I promise that once you watch it you will understand why I was impressed.

But after hearing what this product was suppose to be and how amazing it sounded… I had some concerns.

If this thing does what it sounds like, I can tell you right now I am signing up but I have to admit that I am even skeptical. So, i took a chance, pulled some strings and was able to get an interview scheduled with Amish.

The reason for this interview is because I want to understand what this is all about… I don’t want to be sucked in by the presales stuff, yes this looks promising but I want to talk to Amish.

Thankfully I have a little clout in this industry ( a very minuscule amount but it seemed to be enough) and I was able to get Amish to commit to an interview. He does not know me, we are not long time friends and you do not need to worry… this is not two buddies trying to bullshit anyone… Amish knows the reason for this interview is I want to get real answers about this “The Magic Bullet System“.

I have a problem though… I want to know what you want to know.

Amish has promised to give me 30 minutes… which is extremely generous considering he is in the middle of launching his product and from his last email to me confirming the time I just found out it is his birthday tomorrow also. So thanks again Amish for doing this… and in that 30 minutes he is going to answer 10 questions. I have 5 that I badly want answered but I want 5 more to ask him and I want you to give them to me… what do you want to know!!!

So this is your chance… if you have any concerns or just something you are curious about in regards to Amish Shahs’ Magic Bullet System… this is your chance to ask.

The call will be live on Tuesday, January 5th at 1:00pm Pacific and you will want to be there live for two very good reasons.

I am going to be giving away some random cash prizes to the listeners

I am going to be telling you how you can get access to something special I put together for you. I will be exposing the complete SEO campaign I have in place promoting “The Magic Bullet” and I am going to give you EVERY last detail with a flow chart and action plan of exactly what i did and how I am killing it so far all from SEO. You will be able to completely copy everything I outline and do it yourself. I promise this is going to be a killer value for you. I am going to share everything from keyword research to the plugins I am using and how I am using them. PLUS one lucky listener will win a 3 month membership to the Web2Mayhem and I can guarantee you that if you follow the outline I give and use the web2mayhem you will have a killer combination.

So.. be on the call and you could win cash plus more!

To be on the call all you have to do is go here…

http://www.AttendThisEvent.com/?eventid=10619751

Damn… if I was not hosting the call I know I would still not want to miss this.

OK, here are the 5 questions I want to ask Amish… but I need you to comment below with the #1 question you want the answer to. I realize I am going to get more then 5 but hopefully I can group a few together based on themes and I will pick the 5 best of the bunch.

The five questions I have for him to answer are…

If your system is so powerful, why are you giving public access to it… would it not be better to keep it to yourself?

You have full-time staff but what about those that don’t, how can someone just starting out make your system work?

If I am just new to IM, is your stuff too advanced… why or why not?

What is the difference between what you do and teach as compared to all the other training and tools out there?

Whats the biggest learning experience for you in regards to your online business that you think others could benefit in their own business from knowing?

Now I need 5 more from you… please take a moment and comment below with the number one question you want me to ask Amish.

PS – The call will be recorded and made available to those that can’t make it.

In the last post I did on the new FTC regulations, I went over how the new rules would affect endorsements. In this post, I’ll go over the part that will affect bloggers more than anyone else, although it will still have repercussions for other online marketers as well.

The second part of the new FTC regulations that directly affects online marketers is the new requirement of “disclosure of material connections”. This requires you to fess up to any connection you have to the product or service that you are mentioning, be it that you flat out got paid to try it, you did it in return for free product, or if you just got a free trial. The big difference is if you just got the free trial because they were letting a bunch of people try it, or if they let you try it specifically because you would mention it in your blog. Here’s the specific example that they give about blogging in the FTC Guidelines:

- A consumer who regularly purchases a particular brand of dog food decides one day to purchase a new, more expensive brand made my the same manufacturer. She writes in her personal blog that the change in diet has made her dog’s fur noticeably softer and shinier, and that in her opinion, the new food is definitely worth the extra money. This posting would not be deemed an endorsement under the Guides.

- Assume rather than purchase the dog food with her own money, the consumer gets it for free because the store routinely tracks her purchases and its computer has generated a coupon for a free trial of this new brand. Again, her posting would not be deemed an endorsement under the Guides.

- Assume now that the consumer joins a network marketing program under which she periodically receives various products about which she can write reviews if she wants to do so. If she receives a free bag of the new dog treats through this program, her positive review would be considered an endorsement under the Guides.

So, even though she got the food for free under one of the examples, it wasn’t considered an endorsement, and she didn’t have to disclose a material connection. Now, to me that states that the difference is all in the intent. If you’ve been given a product specifically for marketing purposes, then you need to disclose that. If you got the product for free, but in a way that anyone could get it for free, and not because you have a blog that you can mention it on, then you’re ok (although you might want to share with your blog readers where you got the free stuff!)

If you do receive free product or other compensation, just disclose it. Be upfront about it, “Hey, so and so gave me this to try out, just so you know, but this is still my opinion about it. If you’ve always been upfront about what you’re reviewing and why, you should be ok. It also helps to be picky about what you’re reviewing; stick to things that you really believe in, and even if you are being compensated, your readers are more likely to take what you say at face value. Get into the habit of reviewing things indiscriminately, and you’ll lose the trust of your readers.

Or, you could do what I recently decided to do, actually before these regulations came into affect – I stopped accepting paid reviews You can go back and check out that post “New FTC Regulations“. Plus, I always listed paid reviews as “review me reviews’ so that my readers (you guys) could differentiate between that and other reviews I did.

Another thing I will have to do (which I’ve been doing anyway) is let you know when I’m promoting one of my own products. Most of you know the other sites that I’m involved in, like Portal Feeder, and PPC Kahuna and Traffic Kahuna, and now Web2Mayhem (it’s new! Go check it out at http://web2mayhem.com (it is super powerful… sorry couldn’t resist). But now, when I do a post about any of that, I will have to explicitly state my connection for anybody who wasn’t aware, for the sake of complete transparency.

Now, we’ve been talking about why you should be looking at things differently, and what you should be doing instead, and we’ve even gone through how to make your website more functional in order to meet your customers needs (because it’s all about them, remember?)… oh and yes, this is a continuation from the previous post on Press Releases

The next step is to start to actively promote yourself (or, rather, why you’re the solution to their problems and establish yourself as a thought leader in your category.) But with all of the options out there, how do you do this?

It can be daunting simply because of the sheer number of possibilities.

What we’re going to concentrate on is promoting your website essentially through PR. Now, I’m not referring to simply putting out press releases, although they will be a part of the plan. When I call it PR, I use that term, but what I really mean is not-advertising. Meaning, you’re not going to have to pay for it.

Although paid advertising can and does have a part in marketing yourself on the web, there are approximately 2 billion books available (and a lot of them for free) so what I’m going to concentrate on is seeing this concept of basing your decisions on your buyer’s needs instead of your wants through to the end.

And there are a lot of non-paid resources out there that can promote your business and get people talking about you. Which is kind of what the point of PR was in the first place, before it forgot what it was supposed to do.

Remember, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t utilize paid advertising, or that it doesn’t work. But I think the things that we’re going to outline here are important that you have established first, as they are crucial to the reputation and the success of your business. Plus, they give you a big bang for your non-buck, so why wouldn’t you want to take care of this first?

Here’s what to do:

The first and most important thing to building your communications strategy is to forget about yourself and concentrate on your customer.

Understand your buyers, so you can then create a communications strategy that will reach them.

Stay tuned for more

Continued from previous post Why You Need To Become a Trusted Expert in Your Field

In this next step to becoming a Trusted Expert, you need to develop buyer profiles, which we should actually call buyer personas, because they should be well-rounded enough that they seem like a real person. Only then can you get real insights on what problems these people have that you can solve, and how to reach them with that information.

You may have several buyer profiles for your site, or you may have only one. However many you do have, you will need to figure out the best way to communicate with and serve the needs of that group.

A buyer persona is a fictional person that you have made up who is representative of as type of buyer that you have identified as having a specific interest (a problem you can solve) in your company. Once you’ve developed them, all communications are then targeted towards them. You use the language they use, you advertise in the places that they like to go. You just need to know who they are

By using these personas to develop unique, personalized communications strategies that target each segment specifically, you have a chance to send out a message that truly resonates with your intended target. Because of the two-way nature of web communications, each time you speak with them you have the opportunity to gain even more knowledge about the group, and apply those learnings to you next communications with them.

And to know what problems they have, you need to understand who your buyers are. You need to know who they are, why they need your products, and what problems your products can solve for them. And then, once you know who they are, you can concentrate on creating authentic, compelling web content that will reach them and effectively communicate how you can make their lives easier.

So how do you learn about them? The best possible way would be to interview them; but, as we all know, this isn’t always possible with an online interaction. A survey is also a good way to find information, but again there can be problems. Most people don’t want to take surveys so it’s not a true picture of your audience, and if you offer an incentive, then you get people who aren’t really your target market, but are taking the survey to get the incentive, and skew the results.

The best way to start is to use the information that you already have at your fingertips: analytics.

How did people get to your site?

Where did they go afterwards?

How many visits did it take them to convert into a sale?

What was their average time spent on each page?

You can also gain valuable information about your site and how well it’s working with these questions, but that’s another chapter.

But information from your site is not the only information you should use when determining your buyer personas.

The danger there lies in this…

What if your true targets haven’t been visiting your site?

What if they’re still out there, looking for a solution to their problems, not finding your, or worse, finding one of your competitors instead.

So what you need to do is first figure out what problems your site solves. Then, you figure out who has those problems. Everything else comes out of that. You need to also know what else is out there in your market, and how your competitors are solving problems themselves. Perhaps there is a niche that you’ve identified that no one in your market has identified yet.

When you truly understand what your buyers are looking for and what problems they want you to solve, you can eliminate the guesswork in your communications strategy, and you’ll know where, when, and how to target them.

Stay tuned for next post where i talk about How to Become a trusted Expert!

So whats your thoughts and comments?

AdSense placement targeting campaigns can provide a huge amount of additional reach when combined with your AdWords Search campaign, but the conversion rates have traditionally been much lower for content than search. So, how can you maximize the results from your content campaign?

The most important thing to remember is: don’t treat content like search!

The only thing they have in common is that you’re using text ads for both. With search, people are actively searching out information in your niche (well, they should be if you picked your keywords correctly); with content, the ads are incidental to the content they’re looking at.

Users are also further along in the buying cycle when they’re searching as opposed to looking at content. Therefore, the ad copy that worked for you in search won’t work for you in content. You’ll need to tailor your ad copy specifically for the content environment.

Also remember that contextual advertising (used in the content network) is targeted at the AdGroup level, not at the keyword level. This will also impact how you structure your AdSense campaign. If they aren’t even running on the same parameters, why would it make sense to structure your campaigns the same way?

Take a long look at your keyword combinations; what may have worked well in search, again, won’t work in content. Make any adjustments you feel are necessary. You can also create different mixes AdGroups using similar keywords and creative. By adding keywords, combining them in different ways, changing match types and creating new phrases, you can try to get a greater number of impressions.

One of the benefits of the content network is the ability to site-target; there is software out there (such as AdwordsDigger, found at http://www.adwordsdigger.com) that can run through the thousands of sites on the content network based on your keywords, and come up with a leaner list that will maximize your return on investment.

You’ll also need to take a look at what landing pages you’re directing your content ads to. They may have been created specifically for a search campaign, which means, you guessed it, they won’t be as effective for a content campaign. Since the content user isn’t actively searching for a certain product or service, you’ll need to create dedicated landing pages for your content campaign, which could focus more on learning about your product and creating interest before pushing the sale.

So, how do you run your content campaigns? If you use the same parameters as your search campaign, how is that working for you? If you’ve customized your content campaign, what kind of improvements did you see?

What’s that…. you do not plan the year ahead?

Are You Crazy! How do you expect to succeed if you have no idea where you are going????

You are so lucky you have me, you know that

I just finished a fantastic interview (just under 60 minutes) with the one and only Mark Joyner. If you have not heard of Mark Joyner then you need to… he is one of the pioneers in this industry and is also the owner of the extremely popular Simple.ology

Mark is an expert when it comes to helping people manage their time and I had the priviledge of getting introduced to him from a mutual friend, just a few days ago. Mark needed a small favor and so I helped him out and as a result Mark has agreed to doing an interview with me.

This was a fantastic call and as a result I have made a transcript of it as well (used a professional transcription service this time).

This call opened my eyes about so many things and has helped me so much! I am not hyping this up… I am serious, it was a fantastic call and anyone who is serious about their business and wants to be successful in 2009, NEEDS to listen (or read the transcript).

Yesterday I was traveling back from Colorado Springs (I am going for another week next week if any of you live there, drop me an email and we can maybe have a lunch thing) and I realized that there is no way I can put this plan all in one post… so I am going to have to divide it up.

In the previous post “4 Weeks to Answering What This is All For” I mentioned the four part…

Time: I needed to give myself as much time as I could to focus on the right things, needed to eliminate activities that were time suckers or may even seem important but distracted me from achieving this goal.

Health: I needed to eat better, sleep better and exercise more so I could feel better and be more focused… but I needed time to do that.

Clutter: I needed to organize myself better and delegate better (ties into “Time” but for me I made this a separate category).

Family & Friends: I needed to make room for the people that I love first and foremost.

Today I am going to walk you through the “Time” steps I took. My notes initially were a lot smaller but that is because I knew in my mind what it was they meant and I realized writing this post that I need to go into a little more detail.

NOTE –> This is NOT going to be a four week post series… but it is going to take 2 or 3 more posts (a couple more then I originally anticipated).

Make Some Time

The first part of this entire process for me was making time for things. If my thought was “I have no time because I am too busy” then I was never going to be able to achieve my goal. This also made me look at what the word “too” means and one of the definitions is…

excessively: to a degree exceeding normal or proper limits; “too big”

That means that I have an excess of things that are keeping me busy and therefore I needed to trim the excess. If this was really important to me, then I can NOT use the excuse “too busy”. So the very first thing I needed to do in order to make this work was clean my time table and commit to holding to it. Since this is a 4 week plan, the clean slate time frame was focused on that period of time… meaning i did not have to quit and cancel everything… but i had to at least postpone as much as possible to clear the 4 week period.

Clean Slate Check List

1. Planner: Set up a 4 week daily calendar for this specific goal and put in big letters on the goal date so you can see it. I recommend you use a day planner type calendar that will allow you to pencil in time for each day (you should be using a planning system of some sort anyway but that is just my opinion).

2. List Commitments: On a separate piece of paper, list all time commitments that you would normally be committed to for the next 4 weeks. This includes appointments, activities, meetings and so on.

3. Prioritize Commitments: Now create two columns… one with the header “Critical” and the other “Not Critical” and enter in the appropriate column each commitment. This is harder to do then you may realize at first (was for me anyway) because it is human nature to often think everything is much more important then it is. The thing to remember here is that you are not categorizing for life, this is simply for the next 4 weeks, so if there is an appointment or volunteer activity that can go on without you or be rescheduled then put it in not critical. For those that have a full time job working for someone else, make sure to put the hours of work and travel time (if there is a bit of a commute) in the critical.

4. Reschedule Commitments: For all the “not critical” tasks you now need to reschedule, postpone or cancel. I actually quit one volunteer activity I was involved in because there was enough help and it was too big a time commitment for me. A word of warning… they will try to convince you otherwise but just say no. Do not waffle on this! Tell them that after 4 weeks you will reconsider but for the next 4 weeks the answer is no. Now in your calendar / planner enter in all the critical commitments and mark the times.

Note –> This is going to change a bit in the next 4 weeks as new things come up but I found it a lot easier to say no to new things because I was too busy for them… and the cool thing was the things I said no to were not important and it felt good to say i was too busy for them.

5. Schedule Rest: Our bodies should get at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night. I realize each person is different but one thing I find is when I talk to people about sleep, it is the people that stay up late that feel they need more then that. It is believed that every hour of sleep you get before midnight is worth 2 hours of sleep if you go to bed after midnight and personally I can vouche for this because I find if I go to bed after midnight, I feel that I wake up with almost a hangover type feeling… which never happens when I go to bed earlier and sleep the same amount of hours… unless i have one too many beer

What I did here was make a commitment to be in bed by 9:30pm and this way I could hopefully be a sleep by 10pm. I also made sure to set my alarm for 6am to ensure I got my 7 to 8 hours but did not waste any time sleeping in. Yes, this includes weekends… and remember this is just for the next 4 weeks, but i hoped i could get my body in a better pattern.

This was very important for me because I know personally that giving my body the rest it needs is critical to having the right mindset and having a healthy body.

6. Daily Time Suckers: Next I looked at all the time wasters I participated in that were small daily things but wasted a huge amount of time. An example of this is flopping in front of the TV and wasting 60 minutes watching TV. So I made sure that I committed to clearing up ALL not critical time. I erased everything… no matter what it was because I wanted a fresh slate.

Now for those of you saying you need to have time in there for family and exercise… I 100% agree, but those are not time suckers… I am talking about doing things like going to forums online or just aimlessly browsing the internet, chatting on the phone, playing video games and stuff like that.

Now I struggled here at first with just saying I am committed to this because I know for myself I need constant reminders. So I updated my start page and put a reminder on the wall beside my desk about focusing time on my goal. I recommend you do that as well to keep that reminder front and center.

Result: The end result here is a clean as possible plate that I can start working with, which you will see why i did it in the next couple posts. My mindset behind this is, when I start listing important tasks and activities in the next step, I want to be able give them as much time as possible and I wanted to be able to schedule the rest of my life around them. I am not posting the next step tomorrow (Sunday, I have a few paid reviews I have to get caught up on, so this will be on Monday).

Any questions?

One of the challenges of holding a contest is how do you make it viral so it gets loads of attention. People that enter the contest usually do not want to talk about it with others since it will decrease their chances of winning. With http://www.anaudlife.com, my goal of the contest is to get exposure for the blog and in order to do that I want the contest to encourage participants to talk about the contest in other places and personally I am a fan of the “Ticket” system for allowing participants the opportunity to earn more chances to win by spreading the word.

There are many people who are not big fans of the multi ‘Ticket’ system but the problem is if you have a new blog and you do not already have a significant reader base, having a contest or giveaway that is just a simple “subscribe”, is not going to get you any extra exposure.

Now do not get me wrong, contests with simple one step registrations can be very successful but you need to already have lots of traffic coming to your site to take advantage of it.

For our case study blog we are going to use the multi ‘Ticket’ system and now we need to plan out the criteria.

This can prove to be somewhat of a challenge for people, especially in non “IM” (internet marketing) related niches. One of the great things about the IM niche is you can be pretty sure that most people in the market own a website or blog, have accounts at social networks, know what digg, twitter and squidoo are and the list goes on and on.

You need to be able to take advantage of systems that the sites market will be familiar with and it can not be done in such a way that would appear to be spamming someone. One thing you will want to consider is providing small little video instructions of each criteria that your readers may not be familiar with, this way you can help those that want to participate but do not know how.

Criteria 1: Subscribe to RSS feed via email: This is the top thing that I want people to do. Getting someone opted in to the sites list means repeat traffic. It is important that you also mention that they must remain opted into the list in order to win.

Possible optional criteria:

The optional criteria are the extra things the participant can do to get more chances to win. You will want to award points based on effort and so something that is very easy to do would earn a few points but something that is more difficult would earn more points. Before you worry about the points however, you need to figure out what optional steps to use. Some ideas for our case study blog is…

Vote for Video on YouTube: We would need to create a video about the site but most people know what Youtube is and it would be easy to make a quick video about how to vote the video up and comment on it.

Facebook and or Myspace: You can be pretty sure that a lot of people are familiar with these sites and have accounts at one or both of them. You can create a group or page and have them join and write on their wall about the contest.

Content Creation: Some people love to write and you could have them create content for you that you can use. Ask them to write a 400 word article about your contest and blog, you can then submit this article to a site like ezinearticles.com to get some exposure. You can even offer to link to their site with the article as well, this way you both get a good quality backlink.

Link to Your Blog: I can guarantee you that the majority of your readers will not own a blog but a lot of them will have some way of adding a link to your blog. It never hurts to ask.

Stumble the Page: This is one of those things that a lot of people will not have accounts with but you can provide instructions and hope for the best.

Comment on Other Blog: This one you need to be careful with and provide detailed instructions but is an easy way to get some links via comments. Explain that the comments must be worthwhile and relate directly to the post they are commenting on and are not to enter a link in the comment but simply enter your sites name and url in the asked for comment fields. Make sure that the blog they comment on is at least remotely related to your market.

Cow Brained Idea –> Hmmm…. thinking outside the box here but maybe you could get a little script made that you prefill with blogs you would like them to comment on and the post randomly shows one for them to comment on. Damn I think I am going to get that made… it is freakin genius bwa hahahaha.

Once you have decided on the criteria you are going to use, you will then need to figure out the point values.

Your Help is Wanted –> What other ideas do you have… please comment below and share other possible ideas you have for a non IM “arthritis” blog.

Now I want to dig a little deeper into that because we need to make sure we really get a clear picture in our mind of what this looks like and a plan for each source.

For example, it is easy to say “Subscribers” but do I really have a solid understanding of what this means and a plan as to how to gain subscribers?

The four sources of traffic that we mentioned in the previous post that we are focusing on to achieve our “traffic goals” are…

1 – Subscribers (repeat visitors)

2 – Search Engines (Mainly Google)

3 – Forums & Social Networks

4 – Word of Mouth / Recommendations

Today we are going to start with…

Subscribers (repeat visitors):

Having subscribers is wonderful for repeat traffic, plus you have an asset of readers that you know are targeted to the market of your blog. It is the same as repeat customers, if you ask any profitable company they will tell you that it is much less expensive to sell to a current satisfied customer then it is to a new customer that has never heard of you.

The funny thing about subscribers is the message of “you need a list” is always being preached and yet one of the first things I notice on any new blog or website that I am asked to review is they have either a very weak incentive for people to subscribe or there is nothing at all.

I am a huge believer that if you want to grow your company for the long term, you NEED to create a list of subscribers. This has been a major influence in the growth of my entire business but the challenge that most people have is they think that if they simply put the little rss icon on their site or say “subscribe to my blog” they will build a huge profitable list of subscribers… BUT this simply does not work effectively for the average blog.

Here is how I look at it, there are currently 6 “make money online” blogs that I subscribe to. I have no reason to want to subscribe to any other blogs, especially just for the the sake of doing so because they say so. I might (if i remember) come back and visit other blogs, but unless it gives me a special reason (benefit) for why I should subscribe, well it just is not going to happen. I already have enough information coming my way.

You need to clearly understand that just because a subscription to your blog is free, that is not a compelling enough reason for people to want to make a commitment to your blog by subscribing. You need to create a USP (Unique Selling Position) that sets your offer apart from what everyone else is offering. Give Them a Reason!!!

“But would they not subscribe because of good content like at problogger?”

Yes but lets look at that example:

Problogger.net does not offer an incentive to readers to sign up and has a huge list but it is one of the original make money online industry blogs, it is highly referred to by other high authority sites, it is mentioned in books and loads of other places PLUS it has lots of history of reliable good content.

Now ask your self the question –> Does your new blog fit that mold?

Chances are it does not and the bottom line comes down to this, it has been proven over and over and over again that if you want to dramatically increase your subscriber rate, make an enticing offer with a high perceived value. The high perceived value means that the reward for subscribing outweighs any potential negatives.

OK, so hopefully I have drilled into your heads the power of not only a list but that you need to offer a good enticing offer that encourages readers to subscribe, so now we need to lay out how we plan to do this with http://www.anaudlife.com

1. The first thing is to decide on how we are going to manage subscribers. Our preference is using a combination of Feedburner with Aweber as they work extremely well together tracking your email subscribers together with your direct RSS subscribers. The power of this is with Aweber you can also email your list private offerings and send them occaissional free gifts that encourage them to stick around. You are creating an asset that you own and can use over and over again.

2 . Our target market is those looking for help dealing with “Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms” and the number one symptom is “PAIN”, so we want to make sure we offer something of value that directly benefits them in this area. For this blog we decided on putting together a free ebook called “Leaving Arthritis Pain Behind”. Make sure if you are going to do this that you put together something of value and create a professional looking ebook cover.

3. Another powerful incentive that works very well for us, is contests. This has been very effective at growing our lists but you must do it right. You want to first of all make sure you offer prizes that relate to the interests of your readers. The great thing about contests, is they can not only boost your subscribers but if done right, can get you loads of backlinks and recommendations, which very effectively help with search engine and word of mouth traffic.

Summary: We are going to user Feedburner and Aweber, we are offering a valuable ebook and the last part of our initial traffic plan for “Subscribers” is we are going to create a contest.

In the next couple posts I am going to cover the “contest planning” and I am also going to get into more detail of setting up your opt in system. After that we will move on to the traffic plans for “Search Engines (Mainly Google)”, then “Forums & Social Networks” and then “Word of Mouth / Recommendations”

NOTE: I feel the need to throw this in –> If you are not going to offer an ebook or report or anything like that but just the subscription, you still want to make sure you say more then “Subscribe now” or “sign up for our newsletter”. It is so vitally important that you remember to always ask your self “what are the biggest benefits of doing this for my readers”. I will get into this in more detail in the next few lessons.

So what are your thoughts on this post?

In the previous lesson “Planning Out Your Promotion Strategy“, we decided upon our traffic goals and now it is time to lay out the where and how to achieve those goals.

Step 1: Where are we going to get the Traffic?

I think we often jump into a promotion strategy and immediately think “link building”. While that is an essential part of it, you want to be able to really understand where your traffic is coming from. This is where you need to really understand your audience and where they are. If you simply focus on getting good rankings in Google then you are going to be missing a huge part of the bigger picture. So this is where we lay out where it is we want to get traffic from.

1 – Subscribers (repeat visitors)

2 – Search Engines (Mainly Google)

3 – Forums & Social Networks

4 – Word of Mouth / Recommendations

These are basically the same for all our promotions but it is the next part that separates them for each different niche. You may also wonder why such a different approach compared to that of the COWpetiton blog from our eBook and the simple reason is TIME. We only had 30 days in that example to accomplish our goals and some of these above steps take a lot longer then 30 days to even get started.

Step 2: How are we going to get Traffic from those sources?

Those above 4 steps might seem really basic to you and the reason is “They Are”. Those are essentially all that we are going to focus on and if I did not really want to give you good information I could stop here but the fact is you need to go much deeper and drill down into each specific section to the “HOW”.

It is easy to say I am going to get traffic from subscribers, but if I truly do not understand or plan out how I am going to achieve that, then I may as well say I am going to pull them out of my butt.

So how do you figure out the “HOW”?

You need to clearly understand two things…

1. Who is your audience?

2. What resources do you have available?

For http://www.anaudlife.com, the target audience are people who are suffering with Rheumatoid Arthritis Symptoms or have a loved one who is suffering with it and are looking for help, answers and someone they can relate to. Audrey is not targeting “customers” at all right now and instead is looking to build relationships with her readers.

NOTE: This is an important point and I am not saying you can not monetize your blog right away but you need to be careful and not be in such a rush to make a quick buck. Often we want to start earning revenue so badly that we become “in your face” with our marketing message and completely forget about building a relationship with the reader. Now on the other end of this, their comes a time when you need to try to earn some money and do not be afraid to do it. You may have some of your readers send you hate mail but remember, you have mouths to feed and you are in this to generate revenue.

One of the strong points to the arthritis niche, and I do not want to sound bad here, is that there is no cure for this condition. Of course we pray for a cure everyday but right now there is not one and because of this, it is not a market that people do not come and go out of. Once you have arthritis, you have it for life. (Man that sounds bad to say, please do not take it that way). The point here is it can be tough to build a subscriber base if the niche is one time purchases (say a mattress or GPS device), it is not impossible but a lot harder.

As for the resources available, Audrey is in a very good position here as she is a stay at home mom, who has a husband (ME) that does this for a living. Now for those of you that are not in that boat, what you need to do is take a realistic view of your time and money situation and be honest with yourself as to how much time per day you can spend on this and how much of a monthly budget you can afford to invest in. You NEED to understand this from the beginning because it will influence the next steps dramatically.

IMPORTANT: I want to assure you that 5 years ago I was working a 8 hour day job, supporting a young family and trying to get this business started. I was living pay check to pay check and barely had any time during the day to focus on the business. It was small successes and victories that eventually lead to bigger and better things and if you are in that boat, please do not get discouraged. I understand your situation and I promise that you do not need loads of cash and tonnes of free time to get this started. What you need is a plan, commitment and dedication.

Once you clearly understand your audience and the resources you have available, the next step (which I will cover in the next post) is a continuation of the “HOW” step and we are going to list out exactly how we are going to reach our target audience with the resources we have available to get traffic from each “WHERE” source.

hmm say that three times fast!

So what are you thoughts on this post… does it make sense to you?

When I originally did the COWpetition section a few months ago on promoting the GamerzReviewz blog, I saw a few people try to replicate what I did without understanding the need to step back, look at the big picture and then properly plan. You see, each niche is a completely different animal and what works in one niche is not guaranteed to work in another niche.

For example, I have found twitter to be very good for markets that are full of people that are online addicts, these include marketers, bloggers, programmers and gamers. The real power of Twitter comes from getting people that actually use it to follow you. Getting someone to create a twitter account and follow you is almost useless if they never actually visit the account.

So the first step is to plan out our strategy and this includes creating a goal and then planning out how we are going to achieve that.

Step 1: Set Our Goal

When doing a promotion campaign, you should set your goal as “Traffic” not google rankings, links or subscribers. The reason for this is traffic is where the money is and rankings, links and subscribers are stepping stones to achieving that goal. We also want to create three goals… 6 months, 3 months and 1 month. You can plan out further then that if you want but I do not like to because the blog might not catch on.

This is not by business goal, it is my specific traffic goal for this specific blog. The fact is that not all sites and blogs are going to catch on and after 6 months you will know if you should continue to focus a lot of effort into this project or move on.

Remember you blog is a part of the bigger picture and is a stepping stone to achieving your financial goals. You do not want to digg your heels in and focus your energy on something that is not returning an investment and so after 6 months, re-evaluate the situation and either make plans to grow it more or move on to focus efforts elsewhere. At the minimum I will let a site run for 3 months and within that time will have a good idea about how well it will do but I have also had sites that sucked at first and suddenly 9 months later Google started ranking and sending traffic to it.

Our Traffic Goals:

6 Month: 600 Uniques a day

3 Month: 300 Uniques a day

1 Month: 100 Uniques a day

My Reasoning: I have found that on average doing standard promotion strategies that these numbers are about what we should expect from a niche specific site in the health industry. Whether you agree with me or not, I do not really care and when you set your goals remember they are your goals not someone elses. You do not want to go too high because your first initial few months are in need of momentum and a great way to give you momentum is by achieving realistic goals. You also do not want to under estimate too much because if you make it too easy on yourself you will get lazy.

Now here is the challenge and I know a few of you will say… “I told you so”

http://www.anaudlife.com is already averaging 100+ a day because of this case study and being mentioned on this blog. The challenge is I want to show exactly what we are doing and there is no way to hide the site from you but what we can do (using google analytics) is calculate the traffic from all other sources and get an estimate. The traffic being sent from JohnCow is also not niche targetted and so for the most part will disappear once the case study is over, so we want to dismiss this traffic up front.

IMPORTANT –> Do not be distracted by the fact that the results will not be exact due to the mentioning of the blog, look at the strategies and follow along and implement them yourself. Here is a twist on a popular saying for you that is something I truly believe…

Some people say the glass is half empty, others say half full, I say… why waste time over analyzing the darn thing, slam it down and enjoy it!

If you are going to sit here and over anlyze and pick apart different things, you are going to miss out. I encourage each of you to follow along and figure out how to make this work for you. Make the best of what you are given and enjoy it.

Also, for those of you that have read the eBook “How to Build a Business and Not Just a Blog” this is going to give you a different view because the goal of the COWpetition blog was to sell in 30 days and that limited us on what we could do with it. This one is different and will be a great compliment to the eBook.

Tomorrow I am going to show how I come up with the actions steps to achieve my goals.
