Can You Spell: Hypocrite?

Time for a rant post since they’re all the rage these days. And guess what? Yes, it’s about our millioneurowiki.com project once again. We appreciate and respect your opinions about what we do, however, having seen some of the actions that were taken by a few people after they had their say about us, we felt we had something to say too.
First off, here’s a quote we took from one of many MEW bashing posts:
Looking at the first few pages purchased on the millioneurowiki, most of them are only being used to promote Text Link Ads affiliate links. I hope that trend doesn’t continue and that Cow can correct the mistakes made by the milliondollarwiki.
Fair enough, we see the genuine concern from this reader. However, the following then leaves us flabbergasted. That very same reader jumped onto what seems to be a ‘poke-fun-at-the-money-wikis-for-free-wiki’ bandwagon called Spamipedia dot Com after he was made aware of the site. He then took the opportunity of quickly grabbing the ‘Make Money Blogging‘ page and plaster it with a ton of affiliate links. WTF dude!
This ‘spamipedia‘ site was created and is owned by non-other than our own ranting house guest Jez, proud owner of a crystal ball that tells him whatever he wants to hear. Here’s a another quote, directly from the spamipedia front page:
It is designed to allow newbie bloggers to introduce their sites, comment on other peoples sites and get a free do-follow link in the process.
I am not aware of any other Wiki that has removed the no-follow tag, though I am sure they exist.
That’s another thing about Jez, he seems to have a very selective memory. It looks like he’s trying hard to convince other people that the Million Euro Wiki has a nofollow tag on the outgoing links which would render those links useless in regards to Google PR juice. Despite of us replying to one of his many rants in the comments on our blog, he still pretends he doesn’t know that MEW doesn’t do nofollow. And surely, if he’s as Internet and tech savvy as he apparently appears to be, he could see for himself that there is no nofollow indeed. –but then again, that would spoil the fun wouldn’t it!
We’re not even angry about it. We’re just disappointed in the fact that you’re deliberately not telling the whole truth and try to manipulate people’s opinions by doing so.
Eagerly awaiting your biased opinions on this,
JC.
(PS. Those two links going to spamipedia dot com are nollow, so you can see what a nofollow link really looks like.)

Jez - can you spell O-W-N-E-D?
To be honest, I wasn’t really sure what to do with the page, so I just put some affiliate links and some links to my blog posts. I haven’t promoted it, but I did notice that none of the links were not followed, which confused me. I didn’t think anyone would see the page yet either. I’d never made a Wiki page before so I just did the first thing I could of and linked to everything I could think of.
It links like the links are followed now. I understand what you’re saying though, but I was hoping to build my page up over time. But you’re missing the point. I’m not promoting this as the next big thing. That was what my gripe was, that MEW was being promoted as such. This new Wiki is identical to MEW, which I think is the point of it, because yo can get a page for free.
I haven’t stood up and publicly said that this new one is any different from what you’re doing. What I was standing up against was the hype that was being generated. And I did say that I hoped you had success with your wiki, which I meant by the way.
I was told about this new Wiki yesterday or the day before and I thought I’d test it out before promoting it in any way.
Read my whole article again in context. Look at why I was critical. Admittedly, I did complain about affiliate links, so yes, hypocrite I may be, but I wanted to do something with affiliate links and also link out to useful content. I didn’t want to spend $100 on a wiki page, although I very nearly did. Look at the MDW though: it’s ugly, with some of the top pages just full of promotional banners. The one I really hate is the online dating one.
I’m upset that you’re so angry with me.
And it’s P-W-N-E-D, not O-W-N-E-D.
Prior to pwned it used to be owned. Maybe you are not as tech savy as you believe yourself to be. Dont correct people if you are not 100 percent sure.
Hey Cow, enjoy their jealousy. While the nay-sayers are ranting, raving, and foaming at the mouth, they’ll also be driving traffic to your site
Hi john,
I initially thought they were do-follows, in which case I said you would get penalized for selling links.
I use a plugin to see the no follow and subsequently looked at the site mistook the index page as listed / paid links. It was late and I made a mistake.
I have corrected my error on my wiki. If there are any other mistakes let me know.
I was not trying to deceive anyone with that, it was a cock up on my part.
As I said on my wiki it was thrown up in a couple of hours, that was from never having used mediaWiki before, so yes Kumiko, there may be the odd spelling mistake.
As Angel said the point is let people list their site for free if they want to.
I dont think I am a hypocryte as I am not trying to sell pages for $100 to the ill informed, Im giving them away for free.
Hi Alex,
Im not jealous, I think they were off side pushing this stuff and I spoke out about it.
If you think its a good deal and really want to support Jon Cow and Kumiko then buy a page on his wiki for $100.
So, are you going to buy a page on MEW Alex?
Jez
Jez,
I support the Cow by reading his blog. Unlike you pro-bloggers, I have no use for a MEW page, so buying one would be pointless.
I still think MEW is a fine idea and a good tool for those who know how to use it. I also think that carrying on an argument via the comment section of a blog is childish, so please direct any future questions to me in some other fashion.
“pwned” is for 12 year old warcraft geeks. “owned” is for intelligent people.
““pwned” is for 12 year old warcraft geeks. “owned” is for intelligent people.”
Haha. Yes. I’ve never played Warcraft.
“Maybe you are not as tech savy as you believe yourself to be. Dont correct people if you are not 100 percent sure.”
It was kind of a joke.
I had to look up pwned on WikiPedia of all places, I had no idea what you were talking about
Well, at the end of the day, I thought I could drive traffic to my blog for free and get a boost in SERPs. I’m late for work now. It’s 9 am.
Such hostility. WoW, new people to comment on John Cow’s pages. Mo traffic Mo Problems
haha, cow you did it again. controversy stirs up comments.
Cant we all just get along?
It’s healthy debate. Let it roll. If anything, it’s good for readers because all sides are put forward. People are spinning facts to put MEW in a positive or negative light depending on their point of view and motives. This is a hot topic. I have no problem with being called out. And everything I said about MEW stands. This is a separate issue altogether. Spamipedia is free to use, and nobody has stood and said that the free wiki will have any more value than the paid one.
I think you jumped the gun a bit Cow. The difference is, your wiki is paid for, so there is much more pressure for it to have value. That was my point. If people part with $100, they want more than affiliate links surely. But if it’s free, then really nobody has a right to complain, and calling me out on that issue doesn’t counter any of the points I made against you, especially as I hadn’t said a word about Spamipedia on my blog or anyone else’s.
But, as I said, this is healthy debate. I have no animosity. When you write anything debatable, you will have critics.
I would like to echo what Angel said. I have said some things I regret in the comments, but I really dont bear this site any animosity either.
You wanted MEW to go viral, you wanted free exposure, and you got it.
At least you didnt pay for the bum reviews, that would have been a kicker.
As I said before, if you put out something that adds value for a good price I will be happy to give it a glowing review.
In the past Ive linked to cashQuests (that was the site I criticised) citing them as a source of good info… you have to take the rough with the smooth.
The fact that you pay $100 for a page comes with a reason, most of that budget gets reinvested in advertising and getting traffic to the site. From the main page:”On your page you can setup your online business and benefit from the collective traffic that’s generated by the other page-owners and our marketing campaigns for this site.”
How hard would you work to get results out of something you paid for vs something you’d just get for free? Because you paid for it means you’ll be more motivated to help out.
Yes that’s sound logic and maybe it’s true; we’ll have to wait and see. Who knows, I have a bit of a budget knocking around so maybe I’ll even buy a page and really put it to the test. I honestly don’t think you needed to attack me in this post in this manner though. I was a bit upset about that. You jumped to conclusions. I didn’t give much thought to the free page I set up, so it wasn’t quite as devious as you made out. Maybe I was just experimenting whether I could achieve the same thing for free instead of spending $100. You don’t know because you didn’t ask. Truth is, I hadn’t thought about what to do with the page, but I rushed to put some content up before I went to bed last night.
Anyway, I hope we can all get along now.
Hi John,
Thats a fair point.
Sorry for inaccuracies in some of my comments, I was not trying to stitch you up and regret getting myself into this debacle.
Regards the no-follow thing, it was a genuine mistake, there are so many no-follows in the site, even when you set the variable for outbound links, I literally “saw red” (using search status plugin) and in my haste made a mistake.
I mistook red “john chow” links etc. for outbound links on the index pages when they were in fact internal links.
On that note if you edit “includes/SpecialPage.php” you will find two lines containing (noindex, nofollow) as parameters.
Change those to (noindex, follow), and no follows will be removed from the “most popular” page. It should do the same for your index page.
If you apply the same mod to the “noindex” attribute i.e. (index, follow) it takes out “robots noindex” from the header.
That should help the flow of link juice down to your customers pages and avoid any further confusion over the use of the no-follow attribute, particularly on pages where the site name is referenced…
Im not trying to tell you how to suck eggs here… you may already be aware of this tweak…. I just thought it was worth mentioning.
Jez
pwned sounds much better than owned!
Angel and Jez: We have no beef with you, just felt we had something to say.
I have donuts for lunch so I’m happy. No worries.
I have been writing about the whole MDHP/pixel page/wiki thing for a while. The thing that makes it work is the hype which generates traffic. If you get in early enough you can get traffic.
To test out the theory I have purchased a word on MEW and I am going to report on the results.
Hi John,
Ditto, if Id known where it was gonna lead I would never have stuck my oar in…
I’m glad you let the comments run allowing things to end on a more amicable note, I feel better for that.
Love your theme BTW, the best one Ive seen….
Geez…..it sounds like everybody is about to group hug around a tree. Way to back down on your opinions….
Who’s backing down, Cash Quests? You can read my latest post. Everything I said stands. But it’s counter productive for me to argue about this with you or Cow. I haven’t backed down on any of my opinions, but slinging mud like this, it’s clear whose mud is going to stick.
I have to agree with you on that note cashquests. People are always so quick to follow others rather than think for themselves. Also If you make a statement I feel that you should stick to it rather than suck it up when given direct criticism.
Also on the whole pwned vs owned matter, owned is a way better word than pwned. LOL
Israel, why do you still come to this website? - when you are the first one to critize the cow of being a copy cat. Shouldn’t you work towards preventing an increase in traffic rather than adding to his success?
It was a joke based on the fact that this is an argument on the Internet.
And come on! I thought for myself and have made my arguments, but you can’t argue against vested interests. You can read my opinions on my blog in plane black and white, and you can read all my points here, none of which I retracted and none of which I apologized for. But just because I don’t agree doesn’t mean I have to adopt some sort of aggressive stance.
I haven’t backed down on anything here.
Paul,
Cuz i feel like it. Thats why. What you gonna do about it? nothing.I can say what i want, when i want, how i want, cuz i want. Got that ? Good.
hows that for an answer?
Israel, what’s with the attitude. We try to keep it fun around here.
Yes, let’s go back to fun. Enough with the hot debate for now.
mmm lets just enjoy the grass
Israel, I do have a problem with that. I just dont understand your whole take on the issue. One day you are against the cow and the next you are all goody goody with him. kinda reminds me of someone that cant keep to their word. BTW your answers are incredibly civil and educated.
H-y-p-o-c-r-i-t-e,
@Paul,John or Bob is a copy-cat, there is no question about it both MEW(moo
) and Johncow.com are copies of previous sites, he may make them more than just copies like he did with the cow site but they still started out as copies, Its not necessarily a negative thing.
The moral - don’t dish out what you can’t take back!
