Bovine Comedy - Envy

A little while back we started with part one of seven articles related to Dante’s Divine Comedy and the seven terraces of Purgatory. (Holy Cow! What were we smoking!) Envy comes after Pride and is the second terrace. It’s a nasty emotion which can impair someone’s judgment cloud their vision. Bad habits that will slow down or even reverse the process of your personal growth as a human being (or cow) and a successful blogger.

-Pride. Envy. Wrath. Gluttony. Lust. Sloth. Greed.-

Act2. Envy.

Dante’s original version had the envious on the Second Terrace of Purgatory walking around with their eyes sewn shut and wearing clothing that would make the soul indistinguishable from the ground. In this time and age it’s easy to be envious since our entire world is available to us by a mere click on the mouse button. There’s so many people out there to whom you can compare yourself with, the good, the bad and the ugly. Sometimes we think 90% of the Internet is nothing more than a big popularity contest. Who’s got the coolest blog theme, the best information, the funniest pictures and the most visitors. The list goes on and on.

It’s easier to bash someone’s achievements than to recognize and acknowledge them. This unfortunately is part of human nature which relates to an ancient mechanism in our brains. Everything has to be about ourselves, survival of the fittest and looking out for number one. Don’t forget that most of the popular bloggers didn’t get where they are now without hard work. Some luck is involved and being somewhere at the right time can definitely influence a blog’s popularity but nothing comes for free. Except the $500 we’re giving away.

How often do you see an A-lister react to slander and abuse in the comments? Instead of starting a flame war with the troll, which would probably damage their online rep, they simply delete, edit and perhaps ban the commentator. This way the time and energy saved can be put into their daily writings. They won’t lose any sleep over it and the envious commentator has lost the time and energy he or she could have used in a positive way, building their own blog. It’s also hard to imagine that the A-lister they slagged will ever help them out with anything. Remember while you should respect other people’s opinions and hard work, you don’t have to appreciate them or agree with it. Instead of flaming, use that energy in a positive way so you can grow and reach a level where you won’t feel envy anymore.

Another thing you should think about is how others will look at you and your envious attitude; ‘What a loser, he’s just jealous of success. Can’t do it himself’. This isn’t what you want because those opinions will make you even more jealous since it seems everyone is teaming up against you. A vicious circle.

If you can’t stand someone else’s success, it’s more than likely you’re trying to achieve the same recognition and respect they’re getting. There’s really no other reason for jealousy. Accept the fact that there’s always going to be people out there that can out smart you, out write you, out blog you. It’s a fact of life. Try to learn from them and add the special ingredient that is you to the mix. If you can’t beat them, join them!

digitalnomad isn’t gonna like you for this post! :D

If a comment isn’t loaded with racial slurs or profanity, I may let it through, just to show everyone else the type of character that the person has. I may or may not comment on it. You could easily start a ‘war’ defending yourself, but like you said it kills credibility and it’s exactly what the poster wants. No one wants to see a fight unless it’s on Pay-Per-View or E!

If you can’t find any on this site, a perfect example of what Mr. Cow is referring to can be seen here in the comments section: My New Hustle | Make Money Online

What a great post. Envy gets you nowhere, I’m struggling with conveying and teaching my son that very lesson. He’s 10, it’s difficult. LOL, really great blog.

True, people don’t use their target, instead that, they use other people success for their own milestone!
