Blue Cow Down

Rolling out of bed this morning, flicking on the external monitor to go through our daily emails, we noticed there was something fishy going on when we only received a hooffull of emails. Soon we figured out that all our sites were down so we contacted our hosting company. It appears someone who has a VPS (Virtual Private Server) in their infrastructure had been naughty and was flooding the network from within. Unfortunately this resulted in a couple of nodes going down and we were lucky enough to be on one of them. We were having a cow. Eight hours of traffic down the drain. Oh well, we’re back now! And the good thing was that we didn’t have to run to catch the train for a change because there was hardly any email! Our primary suspect is a guy called Brian Vaughan. His motive being that he didnt have to pay too much for the Adsense ad in the top posts!

Anyway, to stay a little technical, one email we did receive was from MsDanielle and we’re glad we did! She pointed out that some people have been a little naughty when they entered our cowpetition. It seems they have the nofollow tag in place so we’re not getting any linklove from Google. Which kinda was the whole point of the competition in the first place!

So how did she know how to check if the nofollow tag was used? To be honest, we should have known to because it was right under our noses! There’s a plugin for FireFox we use called ‘SEO for Firefox‘. Within the preferences you can select to have it highlight all links that use the nofollow tag on any page!

So guess what boys and girls? We’re going through each and everyone of your submissions and do what cows do when they see red; Go mad and chuck you out of the competition! Seriously, a little link love won’t hurt your page, and we’re offering $500 for it!

Thanks for the tip,
I’ve been trying to find out how to do it.
By the way, sorry about the misunderstanding on the Authority Blog Forum, it has been fixed.
Cheers

I use Search Status for Firefox. It’s a plugin that gives you the PR, Alexa rank of a page, and will also highlight the no-follow links. It displays the info in the status bar at the bottom of Firefox, so it’s non-intrusive. Here’s the link for anyone who is interested:

Sorry you were down for so long! Glad to have you back in the pasture though.

Ok, I checked my page. No nofollow in my source. I even turn off nofollow in my comments and trackbacks.

Comments get nofollow automatically turned off after 2 days, just to catch spam that might slip through.

So everyone feel free to visit and comment or link to a post for some link love.

I really like that application. By the way, I noticed that your site was down too. I was wondering what happened. At least it’s fine now.

That SEO for Firefox looks interesting. I wonder what kind of options that has, I’ll have to read up on that.

glad your site is up and running, and that everyone is making sure their links are good. if people do enter with nofollows, that’s really not fair for you guys since you’re offering such a great prize. best of luck! :D
