Blog Pest Control

Want to Learn How to Build a Business Not Just a Blog.. for FREE? CLICK HERE Now to Find Out How!

Howdy people! Today we’d like to highlight a plugin which has proven itself extremely useful in the last few days. It helped us to stop wasting time with little annoyances, time that we could use to write new blog posts.
There’s nothing wrong when your blog post gets negative reactions. No everyone has to agree to what you say. What you want though is constructive criticism, not useless rants for the sake of ranting. This just brings a negative vibe to the whole thing.

We had one of them. An annoying troll who loved nothing more than to waste our time with useless comments without any suggestions for improvement. We quickly grew tired. Not just of him but the fact that we were wasting out time with reading his crap. So Lester Chan brought us the perfect solution! WP-Ban plugin. He provides a whole range of plugins of which some we use here. We’ve got the “vote for this post” plugin, which allows you guys to rate a post with a number of stars. The amount of views a post has had also is displayed by one of Lester’s awesome plugins.

A few days ago we installed this WP-Ban plugin and this little gem allows the blogowner to pick who can come to the party and who can’t. Besides numerous options of blocking someones IP address, IP range, hostname and even referers, you can also take a little pleasure out of the fact that you can display whatever message you like to on the page the banned troll gets to see when they attempt to surf to your blog. It even allows you to writeup a full landingpage in HTML especially designed for your favorite trolls!

If that’s not satisfaction enough, the plugin holds a record of how many attempts the troll has done to get back onto your blog for your viewing pleasure. We hope we don’t have to use this plugin too often but it seems to be a necessary evil sometime when you’re trying to run a nice blog. Another option would be to disable the comments section all together but that just seems a bit drastic. No need to punish everyone for one trolls naughtiness! Be sure to checkout the rest of Chester’s plugins as he’s got some great stuff in there. Thank for making our lifes easier Chester!

Sounds like a very useful plugin indeed. Don’t take the route Kumiko already did by disabling all commenting.

Hmm.. what about proxy sites? From what I know you even own at least one.. I don’t think somebody can be stopped from commenting that easy. Possible solutions?

Comment moderation or disabling all commenting.

great plugin Mr Moo, going to use this to get rid of the spammers, it is getting annoying now I am getting about 10-15 a day which are all being caught by the Aksimet spam plugin.

This will be really useful to ban these spammers :)

Nice timing, I got my first troll and noticed my first serious comment spammer this morning. Does everybody feel this proud after getting their first troll?

I’m still waiting for mine, and I’m hoping that when he comes he will be a real-life troll.

I think we all would rather not have these people waste our valuable time and theirs, but sometimes, it’s unavoidable

Thank you. I’m sick of deleting spam comments - so that plug in should zap the buggers.

By the way - where did you get your submit this to Digg plug in? A visitor asked me if i had one, so i tried to download one, and I can’t get it to work.

How come this site hasn’t been updated in a couple days now? Is Mr Moo on vacation?

Sounds like some pretty awesome plugins, especially the ban plugin. It could definitely come in useful if there’s a certain person who won’t leave you alone. You could really get ‘em back. ;)

This is my first time to post a comment to your blog so it does not make me a pest, right? Honestly, I am a new blogger and would love to use the plugin but don’t know how to. Can somebody tell me how?

2007-10-24 22:03:22

A handy tool indeed. However, it’s of no use to me because I have no traffic to my personal blog and thus no comments.

I find comments to be an enigma. Every now and then I’ll come across a great blog or article, and there’s always some jerk who leaves some rude and slightly irrelevant comment that is not called for.

The only criticism that is ever acceptable is constructive criticism. Everything else is just the rantings of a bitter soul.

Sorry to hear about your spamming issues. I get quite a few spammed comments from various advertisers for automobiles, and am not excluded from the infamous adult sites. It can be somewhat irritating moderating spam. I will have to check this plugin out.
