It’s time for the third article in our A-lister series. After Courtney Tuttle and Jim Kukral, this man needs no further introduction, but we’ll give him some anyway. He’s the other guy with a blog that kinda sounds like ours. Everyone please give it up for The Big Beef himself:
*Insert applause here*
The John Chow dot Com blog started on December 2005. Before that time it was a served as a personal home page. There wasn’t anything on it other than my photo and list of sites I run. The page stayed like that over five years and for most of that time I was ranked number 1 on Google for John Chow. However, not updating a page doesn’t bod well with search engines and eventually, I lost my number 1 ranking. I was debating on the best way to get my rank back and turning the home page into a blog seem like the best solution. It also seem like a good way to get my hands wet in blogging. So on December 1, 2005, the Wired World of John Chow became John Chow dot Com.
The purpose of John Chow dot Com was to help restore my number Google ranking for my name. It did that within the first two weeks (of course I no longer rank for my name anymore but that’s another story). The other purpose of the blog was to serve as a platform for my miscellaneous rambling. The blog was never designed to make money. As a matter of fact, I was so adverse to the site making money that I donated all the blog’s 2006 income to charity. The idea of a personal blog making money didn’t sit well with me. However, since the blog is pretty commercial now, I don’t have much of a problem with it. The blog’s income now goes to various charities and a family trust.
The decision to monetize the blog came about because I wanted to prove that money can be made by blogging. The original goal of the case study was to create full time income with part time blogging. I’m sure you’ll agree that I blew that goal away.
I went into blogging the same way I went into my first website – for fun. I blog for fun. I don’t blog for money. Yes, the blog makes a lot of money, but from a time investment standpoint, John Chow dot Com is one of my least profitable ventures. If you’re going to blog, then doing for the fun of it and not for the money it can make you. If my blog made nothing today, I would still be updating it. I really think this attitude is a big reason for the success of the site. That, and people love to see what I ate for dinner. ![]()

John Chow certainly eats well! Also agree about how blgging is the least profitable area of making money online. My hourly wage for blogging must suck!
I guess it’s easy to stay motivated when you’re raking in the big bucks! I hope to be at a similar point one day, but its’ still fun to me regardless. I guess blogging is not the best way to make money online, but it’s one that I’m still going to try to do for now! Nice work, John Cow.
Unless you’re one of the big shots, blogging really won’t pay for the effort you put into it. Blogging is for fun and the self-recognition. Some people do it for the fame of being one of the top bloggers in their industry. Others do it because they are bored. Others do it because they hate their job.
I need to get me one-o-them “Family Trust” things going!
20 a month is no joke… 5 would be nice
Hmmm…the evil John Chow, not blogging for money?
You know we all love you and your blog.

As a 5 year blogger, I’ve got new found respect for the Chow Meister. I have always respected him, but the blog putting other people and his family first? That’s a fantastic thing to do :)
is this Chow or Cow? I am confused by this post…hahahahahahaa
moooooooooo
Yeah it has to be for fun. For most bloggers, blogging only makes them a few nickels. But they continue cause its fun. its fun to share info and have people read your words. Its like the coolest thing
Allyn, a Family Trust is definately the way to go in my opinion … seperates personal wealth from that of business interests, among other benefits.
@ Mr. Rajawang,
It started with Cow introducing Chow, then the rest of it was Chow all the way.
I am sure everyone knew he was making money on his blog but I doubt many knew he was giving some of it away to Charity until this post. Nice move lol
I think most of us have heard the same John Chow’s story and more….
Good on John…. Definitely the type of blogger we need at the top to aspire too.
The Evil one giving away income to charity. What’s next, Armageddon?
Jokes aside, I have been reading John Chow quite frequently and I feel he comes across as a straight person. He says what he meant. Just because he uses each and every technique to earn money online doesn’t make him a evil person.
But money being the root of all evil, and he has made so much money….
So still the evil one for me…
Food is the real reason I visit John Chow!
John Chow’s blog has inspired a lot of sites popping everywhere trying to earn like John Chow.
Which makes me think, “Maybe I should also donate to charity”.
Well John Chow is in other level, he wins like $20k/month  . Btw he does a great job…don’t feel bad cow, you are doing it great too
He’s a very good milker! Would like him to work in my barn…
this is all fabricated lies! its part of his attempt at building a mystique. he doesnt blog for the money. ha!!
really? You not blogging for money?
that is good. i always read that if you blogging for the sake of money, you will fail. what if had to? I mean yes, money is the sole purpose, but that doesn’t make it bad right? if you know something is worthless, you will hardly pay attention to it. People like you make others want to copy is my words sound harsh? Sorry or hardly understandable? I must be tired reading all night long.
I have to keep it fun with this blogging, it can
drive you crazy. Especially if you are trying to make money.
Blogging should never be about making money. This is why i always read your posts John.
