banner experimentAs you know, I’m always on the lookout for free stuff; well, I’ve been asked to review something new to show you, and best of all, it’s free. And if it’s something free that helps to drive some traffic to your site and build links that improve your search engine ranking, well, then that, my friends, is a win-win.

http://www.bannerexperiment.com is a top list/link exchange that works a little bit differently than all the rest. It uses mini-banners (88×31 pixels) instead of text links to link to your website. There are spots for 500 mini-banners – the sites that drive the most traffic to BannerExperiment get displayed.

It is free (yay) to sign up, and you can submit an unlimited number of websites (although each website can only be submitted once). If, at any time, you want to change the banner that is displayed, you only need to send them another banner (just make sure that the email is coming from the address you signed up with – so they know that it’s you.)

The sites that land in the top 500 for inbound traffic will get their sites displayed on the main page. The more traffic you send, the higher your ranking, and the higher up on the page your mini-banner gets displayed. In addition, when you mouse over any mini-banner, you get the ranking info, URL, description of the website, and weekly stat information.

The site is brand-spanking new, and so if you were to sign up right now, you’d be guaranteed a spot and have a jump on establishing some traffic and staying up.

So if you’re in need of some reciprocal links (and who isn’t) and the idea of free appeals to you (again, duh), head on over to http://www.bannerexperiment.com to sign up and upload your mini-banner now.

    Thanks for sharing :)

Just for the info http://www.bannerexperiment.com link is not working.

  2. Kevin says:

I'm very surprised that you posted about this site, nevermind speaking about it positively.

What value does any reader adding their link to a banner farm like this? It has a PR of 0 but even if it had a PR 6 it wouldn't really matter as you would be sharing the juice with hundreds of other people.

Your tips here are normally great so was a bit surprised to see this.

  3. Its a paid review

  4. Jason says:

I think that it is a paid review as well. Great link though. Thanks!

  5. Harry says:

You should write a post on 'How Paid Reviews Can Kill Your Blog'.

  6. Nah I was thinking of one called “People who complain too much and how you need to filter out good feedback from crap”

  7. Harry says:

Yes. That would also be a nice post and something worth a share. Infact anything apart from paid reviews will be good ;)

  8. Harry says:

Don't take me wrong. I follow your blog since the very beginning and really like it. I would really appreciate if the paid reviews are stretched a bit. Like one or two a week. Thanx!

  9. Kevin says:

I didn't see any note saying that the post was paid for however I don't think it changes anything. A paid review should still be a review and not just an advertisement i.e. it should still be your opinion.

Do you not think it is counterproductive to show readers great ways to promote their sites and make money through the web and then the next day tell them that posting their link on a banner farm is great?

I'm not trying to rag on you. I'm a subscriber and there has been fantastic detailed posts on blogging and making money online here in the past. Which is why I am so surprised that you were willing to write this article.

  10. Does it really matter whether its a paid review ? Its a free service and you can get some traffic and a back link for free. If Jason didn't blog about it I wouldn't have heard about it so I think its good he blogged about it whether its a paid review or not. I think paid reviews are ok unless you are promoting something really worthless.

  11. Kevin, have you looked into it, have you signed up… it is more than just plastering your banner on their network. Second of all it is a guy trying to get his idea to take off and paid for a review, so i did a “honest” review of it.

Signing up is free, the people signing up can get exposure… whether it small or large.

What I am surprised at is you are taking such a stance on this and I agree with Nishadha on this.

You have a great blog yourself and as such you can decide what reviews you want to do. I felt his site offered what it says it does, it is not anything that is a scam or will cause anything negative to any participant. If this was something different from what they say it is, that would be different but it does and is exactly as they say it is.

This type of thing was 10 a penny not so long ago. The first 1 or 2 got away with charging for banners but then every copycat with a keyboard started doing the same thing. Paid review or no paid review – an honest review would be give it a go cos it free but be aware that Google frown on link schemes link this and there's also very little chance of seeing any benefit from having a link on a page with so many other links and so little content on it.

  13. Hugo Santos says:

hey john, your penultimate link is not working

  14. It's really great to post my comments on such a blog. I would like to appreciate the great work done by the web master and would like to tell everyone that they should post their interesting comments and should make this blog interesting. Once again I would like to say keep it up to blog owner!!!! http://www.naturalherbalsinc.com

  15. Well interesting idea !

  16. Zoran says:

    Hi,

Well everything that is free and could get you some more attention (traffic) is worth of trying. But it is not the rule that the traffic will come every time right? It takes time and effort.

We should see what the BannerExperiment will produce, but I think it has a chance.

    Regards,

    Zoran

  17. Steve says:

Hey this looks great! Banner ads now can be used effectively by the online marketing companies.

  18. Thanks for the information. This is a neat site i will have to tell others about this post so they can learn about it as well.

  19. Melvin says:

well using it doesn't really do much but the fact that it doesn't cost users anything is a factor to consider…

  20. Wow. Is that really the type of users you cater to?

I usually try to not open my mouth, unless I have something positive to say, but this stuff is so extremely 90'ish, I'm amazed you would even consider spending time reviewing this sort nonsense.

  21. Ahh, didn't review read through the comments. So it's a paid review. That makes it a hole lot worse.

I have no idea how I got on the John Chow newsletter in the first place, but I'm definitely unsubscribing instantly. Quality first, people. Don't waste our time with BS like this.

  22. being a guy who is the owner of http://www.engagers.dk i wouldnt even consider opening my mouth in the first place.
Have you started any good internet startups yet or are you only one of those jealous people who must talk shit about other´s?

If you have any well visited websites lets show them so that we can see what you have accomplished.
    You´re a fake!

  23. Travel says:

    thank for sharing,
    i think i will give it a try !

  24. Kevin says:

I apologise if my comments came out the wrong way. I just know you have a lot of experience on the web.

I agree, it is free. And I'm sure the person who runs the site is a nice guy. But that doesn't make it worthwhile for people to be submitting their links to it.

Although it won't cost you any money, it will cost you time, and time is one of the most previous things when you are working online. I could spend a few hours submitting a site to 50 banner farms like this one but I would more benefit by spending that time adding to my own site – be it a directory, article, blog post or whatever.

As I said, this kind of site is counter productive. The only people who will visit the site are the people who are submitting their own banner. You might get a visit or two every other week if you are incredibly lucky but I doubt that the traffic will be targeted.

I appreciate everyone has a different opinion on this kind of thing so we will just have to agree to disagree :) :)

  25. Although it is free it still a link farm and could do your site more harm than good advertising your site on it. There are no quick fixes, solid ontheme link building is the only way to do it.

I hope they paid you well to review though ;)

  26. OK, you are going to have to tell me how that site is going to do any harm. So me proof you know this for a fact because I have NEVER in any of my blogs, seen anything negative from something like this service. Show me actual proof you can back up your comment with and I will listen.

I have hundreds of blogs and sites and i do every thing from one way linking, directories, press releases and even link exchanges.

I am not defending this site but what I am doing is holding you to your comments. It is very easy to say “that is dangerous” cause you heard from soemone it was, so I hope you have actual proof to back yourself up.

  27. lol.. thanks for clarifying but know I was not upset. These are the comments I love commenting on because they are interesting. I appreciate that you felt you could express yourself :)

If you are being honest and speaking fact (I hate it when peopel throw theories around liek fact) then there is never a reason to be upset with any comments.
