Backup Your Blog

Seriously, if you’re not already doing so, you should make a habit out of backing up your blog. There are plenty of ways to do it. It might seem a pain in the hole, but you can ask Gary from mrgarylee.com how much pain in the hole he’s feeling right now. He’s been hacked and the kids that did it seem to have gone right ahead and deleted everything they found on his account.
This shows that crap like this can happen to just about anyone. Gary’s blog is pretty popular and most of you probably know it. Here’s what you see now when you visit his blog. Guess it’s kinda cute if you like red.

So what’s the point in doing this we wonder. We’ve never heard of the Turkish Data Processing Military. Doesn’t the ‘Military’ have better things to do than hit the delete button on other people’s property? The level of this ‘hack’ is kinda like: “Look mommy, I can finally pee while standing up!”.
Anyhoo, before we piss off some pale looking Turkish kid with bulletproof glasses and probably more craters on his face than the moon has, we’ll give you a quick tip to perform your wordpress backups. Guess what, there’s a plugin that’ll do just that for you!
Mr Lester Chan has been mentioned before on our blog and we’re doing it again. Why not? The guy is a genius and he’s produced some of the best plugins out there for all you blog owners! What you need is the WP-DBManager 2.20 Wordpress Plugin. All you need to do is upload this baby, activate it and you’re ready to rock and roll — and backup. Hit the “Backup Database” button and it’ll do just that. From there it would be clever to go into the backups folder and download a copy to your PC or MAC.
We hope Mr Gary Lee will find his backups soon, and we also hope that TDPM starts realizing that they really need a new designer for their silly logos.

2009 Planning Guide - My Gift To You!

I have an automatic backup that does it everyday. I get my nightly email with my backup attachment. I’ve read too many horror stories!
One time I was porting my blog to another host provider and thought I had deleted my database files by accident. I had not properly backed up my files (*slapping side of my head*) and my heart stopped for a moment when I feared my files could be gone forever. Luckily the provider was able to retrieve them.
Note to self: Back up files!
Random Tip: If you accidentally delete a few posts, you may be able to retrieve them from Google cache…just found that out the other day.

Feel free to share your method. Is it a plugin?
This is the plugin I use: http://www.ilfilosofo.com/blog/wp-db-backup/
It emails me with my database daily as as I use Gmail, that acts as offline storage. A couple of days ago I wanted to setup an offline version of my blog so I could fiddle around with the theme and this backup came in really handy - I just imported the sql and viola - instant offline blog! Just another benefit to backing up…
I have been hearing a lot about this hacking recently!!
Is there a way to backup Blogger blogs?
Man, that must really suck for Lee. I would kill myself if that happened to me… nah, I really wouldn’t. But I’d be so pissed if someone like that just took over what I’ve worked so hard on. Good thing I don’t use an online blog manager like WordPress for my blog.
I am backing up my database using the backup app from my webhosting. Do I still need to backup using this plugin?
man i feel sorry for him, all his hard work vanish in a blink of an eye, i hope he have backup for his site
im installing the plugin youre suggested now!
Thanks John for your compliments =D
try going to waybackmachine / archives.org to recover content.
Does this plugin backs up images too?
Always a timely reminder to BTFU my posts.
Having our databases backed up is really important as we can’t predict these childish act nowadays.
I do agree with you that they have no creativity with their designs and all they can do is to ruin Turkey’s reputation by using Turkey’s flag design as their logo.
I use WP-DatabaseBackup. It’s very easy and sends my backup on email daily (or weekly). I also backup my uploads directory once every two weeks or so. I never had any problem till now, but I’m way too small to attract hackers attention now
I’ve never had a problem with being hacked before, I did have a problem of me accidentally deleting a database one time, now that was kinda bad
I always backup my blog daily.
Thanks for the reminder to backup my blog… the plugin that Caroline suggested sounds good if you need an email of the backup. Scott
