Well, I’ve read that the application fee for one of these “customized” domain names starts at $100,000, so there won’t be as many of them as we might think. The price alone makes an unfair playing field for large and small businesses on the internet.

Yes, personally I don’t like Adult sites. My point was though that somebody shouldn’t be fooled or tricked into the site. For a time, whitehouse [dot] com was an adult site (not sure if it is anymore). If you accidently typed .com instead of .gov you ended up on an adult site. I’m sure the folks who acquired the .com planned on that. And there are also plenty of examples of misspellings of popular kids sites that lead to an adult site. That shouldn’t be allowed to happen.

Historically, you had .com, .gov, .org, .edu. The latter three were reserved for and only given to the appropriate entities. It would be a lot easier to reserve .xxx for adult sites. But of course, many adult sites don’t care about being found ledgimately.

As to our domain, we picked it long before people were picking domains based on keywords. jumbocdrates would have actually been better. But as it is, Jumbo CD Investments is our company name. lol

So is it that you just don’t like adult sites? Maybe your domain should be jumbocdratesblahblahblah.money so that nobody has a chance in heck of finding it? The problem is, what qualifies as a dot com if you require certain business types to use a specific TLD? Why would whitehouse.gov get to use .com when it clearly is government related?

See what I mean? I appreciate you not wanting to stumble upon adult sites, but that is the whole point of this thing… getting people to your site that don’t necessarily know if they will like it or not?

Not sure what to make of this decision. Seems like it has a great deal of potential both good and bad. But I do have to thank you because if not for this posting I wouldn’t have thought to check out my domain names and realized that 3 of them are set to expire! Maybe I should stop sending the notifications from Name Cheap to /dev/null

If most Wordpress users started using a dot.blog TLD you may not be keen to stick with a dot com. I can foresee this all becoming messy as people jump on the bandwagon and choose names only to find that others in their niche have opted for a different one, which leaves them out of searches for that particular name. Domain name sellers will be happy though - they will be singing all the way to their dot banks.

My questions :

Whether it will prompt google to do away with the boost it gives to ‘.com’ when it comes to rankings.

If the general public will become more accepting of non ‘.com’ domains (i.e. more ready to trust and buy from them). If so how long will it take.

Note : A cyrillic ‘COM’ is different to a latin ‘COM’ but looks exactly the same. Now that could be an interesting can of worms

The one I would prefer is .xxx or .sex and force those type of sites to use those domains. At least that way, I won’t get blasted with things I don’t want to view if I happen to forget a website such as whitehouse . gov and accidently type whitehorse . com.

Other than that, I agree it seems like a nightmare for off-page marketing and people would potentially have to buy extra domains and have redirects to make sure people get to the right page.
